minch25 (346), Columbus, Ohio, USA Sep 1, 2008 Had this several times before but never got around to rating it. Reddish copper color, medium receding head. Abrasive hop bitterness - coniferous. Crystal malt. Either a little past its prime or Arrogant Bastard is slipping. Based on the last two samples, I’m not really digging this these days. skibumphishead (180), USA Aug 31, 2008 22 shared with Brie. I have had this beer many times. This time I am drinking it at cellar temp and it is sweet and flavorful. I picked it up at a grocery store on my way home from hiking Mount Monadnock. The flavors are molasses and pine tree hops. Yumarooski. REDBOSOX (70), Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, USA Aug 31, 2008 The folks at Stone Brewing Company certainly know how to market a beer AND make it taste great! I didn’t expect this beer to be so good simply because the bottle was so great to read. Well, it was good. Very good! It pours a nice dark reddish brown. It’s hoppy and smells pleasant. You can taste caramel and chocolate in it. The finish is slightly bitter yet very pleasant. This is one everyone must try at least once. EricE (446), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Aug 30, 2008 Dark red brown pour with some haze. Hoppy aroma with raisins, caramel and chocolate. Malt flavor with a ton of piny hops. Creamy with caramel. Bitterness and alcohol flavor linger on the tongue. matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Aug 29, 2008 bomber from premier gourmet. poours deep reddish brown with a lovely tan head. big malty aromas. caramel, candy, fruitiness. big hops in the aroma as well: grapefruit, citrus. the flavours are well balanced and quite enjoyable. not really anything negative to point out and while i enjoyed it it didnt really blow me away. id gladly purchase this anytime. TheJester (694), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Aug 29, 2008 500 mL bottle. Deep rust-brown with a small but solid and sticky head. The aroma is strong, and consists entirely of citrussy hops. The flavour is beautifully (and surprisingly, considering the hops) balanced, if not terribly complex. The solid caramel and roasted malt hold their own. The alcohol is there, but doesn’t get in the way. Nice bitter finish. Very drinkable. satan165 (540), River Grove, Illinois, USA Aug 28, 2008 Updated: Aug 29, 2008this is truly an american strong ale. too strong to be an APA, too well balanced to be an IPA. the malt is truly the star of this show -- it still shines through despite the intense IBUs, where lesser malts would be crushed. this is very well put together beer i could live with for a long long time due to its wildly intelligent balance.
ive had this a few times over the years, but the last time i tried it i didnt really understand it. this is a rite of passage, tonite i am enlightened...and in love phishpond417 (1861), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Aug 28, 2008 Sampled on draught, pours a thick cloudy copperish colour with a medium sized white head. Aroma is hoppy, with piney notesm, wood, bourbon and smoke. Taste is astringent, again hoppy, citrusy and aggresive indeed. Tackles your palate right off the bat. I think if I would have had more then one pint of this I would have had trouble riding my bike home.
