Reeks of grapefruity hops, alcohol, citrus grove. It’s hoppy. The taste is mostly hops, abusive, numbing hops. Almost totally linear like chewing on the pith of an underripe grapefruit. Maybe some raw, earthy, grassy barley at the finish. Pithy, ridiculously astringent, dry. Interesting, but not something I’d trip my grandma for to get the last bottle on earth. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 31, 2003 Updated: Dec 14, 2005Original rating: Bronze body and an interesting aroma of rich crystal malts, strong, enigmatic Stone-style hops, and honeydew. Flavor is fairly hoppy but has a big fat brown sugar and cinnamon malty middle from the obnoxious malts. Full, chewy palate that becomes cloying. Every time I sample this beer, I find myself dissappointed. The thick malt qualities remind me of a double Fat Tire. Considerably less nuanced than advertised. I’m a huge Stone fan, but not so much when it comes to this beer. I guess I’m "not worthy". Stone IPA is a champion and clearly superior to this brew. Ditto for Double Bastard. For some reason I still keep coming back to the Arrogant Bastard though. 8,4,6,3,15.
Re-rate from a fresh draught pint: This is a completely different beer. Big fat fruit notes and nice, fresh hop sting balance the chewy malts wonderfully. I now realize that I probably have never had a fresh bottle. Based on the fresh draught sample, my rating goes from a 3.6 to a 4. BDR (2167), Roseville, Minnesota, USA

Deep, gorgeous hazy red pour supporting a creamy tan head. Taste is a strong, elegant bitter, lasts through the finish and takes on grassy bready qualities. Caramel and lots of hops, but not overdone. Full-bodied and very dry. Very light pine and nice hoppiness. Score remains; great brew, a worthy candidate for the style standard. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 17, 2005 To style it is a fine beer, but it is just way too hopped and thus one dimensional for my tastes. Stone has some well balanced beers and I know they are just trying to give the hop heads what they want, but I think it goes too far...you can add the hops and still balance it with a malt profile and I don’t think that is done here. Still unusual and drinkable, but not something I’d buy again. blutt59 (2147), Dallas, Texas, USA
