Wonderful Aroma is of citrus hops, taste is very complex, hops, hints of citrus and grapefruit, notes of caramel malt to balance things out a little, bitter hop finish, very complex. My first stone brew, but definately not my last. Got to give props to my brother for picking this up for me on his western trip argo0 (6987), Washington DC, USA

Aroma is intense grapefruit, medium sweet. Taste is grapefruit, chocolate, finishing alcohol-tinged grapefruit and light chocolate. Medium-full body. I could see this as one of my "Desert Island Beers" -- it's very satisfying, though not enough to stop you from wanting another one or two or six. bonesbeer99 (2), California, USA does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 12, 2002 I am Barely worthy of such a fine brew .... a BIG beer - definetly NOT for wusses. (note, hops don’t scare me). What a joy from start to finnish! Beauttiful head, wonderful dark red color, lovely lace, aroma that clung to the air until morning, and a thick bodied drinkability that that left my friend and I grinning with arrogance for hours! | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 17, 2003 A rich, assertive but nicely balanced West Coast ale with a quite complex aroma and flavor. Poured with a beige med-sized rocky head that's fairly long lasting; good lacing. Deep amber color with coppery red highlights. Slight chill haze typical of bottle conditioned beers; cleared as the beer warmed. Perfumy floral hop bouquet with underlying citrus-grapefruit notes. Sweet caramel malt nose with a myriad of fruity esters that I was a bit hard pressed to put my finger on; perhaps raisin and plum with a bit of pear? Noticeable alcohol aroma that became more evident as the glass warmed. Flavor starts with a rich malt sweetness and bold hop bitterness that follows through to the finish. Fruity esters emerge mid-palate with a subtle toasty note. Malt richness dries a bit towards the finish but the hop bitterness remains assertive. Palate has a velvety firmness enhanced by a soft carboantion. Very slight astringency in the aftertaste. For all its bold arrogance this brew actually mellows a bit (relatively speaking) as the glass warms making it a nice ale to enjoy at a leisurely pace. hoppyman (34), Quebec, Canada

Nothing but strong hops in the aroma, so much so that it almost seems to burn my nose. Full bodied and not as bitter as the aroma leads you to believe. The flavor is magnificent, with a strong hoppiness that is countered by a wonderful malty sweetness. The finish is mostly hops with a lingering bitterness and piney aftertaste. I can"t wait to try the Double Bastard Ale.
