Gravity cask at Oxford Beer Festival. Almost black with a bubly tan head. A rich treat of coffee, chocolate, treacle and a little tobacco. Very smooth mouthfeel with reasonable carbonation. and plenty of alcohol.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 27 Nov 2009) Pitch black colour with frothy, pale brown head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of chocolate, black coffee and slightly vinous hints of alcohol. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, strong black coffee, prunes, raisins, cocoa and liquorice. Slightly vinous and warming finish with a decent coffee/cocoa bitterness. Full body, fairly sweet. Lovely beer - one to sip slowly.

A Mes rate. Cask at the White Horse.
Mahogany black with a really good dark tan head. Superb dark bitter chocolate and liquorice. Alcohol is hidden superbly well. Excellent creamy feel, lots of body. Good dryness in the finish. Good length. Nicely balanced. Just really good all round.

Ok, got a bottle of this here. Thick dark and milkshake like. Islands of a dark brown foam. Heavy dark malt and black cherries in the aroma. A whiff of alcohol amidst a wave of cream gives it the smell of a hot toddy. Very full in the mouth, thick and milky. Well roasted and full of strong coffee flavour. A hint of metal there too and an airy alcoholic burn aswell. Sweet but with a salty finish. Intense.

[Cask at the Nag’s Head, Reading] Thought this was a one-off special that I’d somehow managed to miss at the Reading Beer Festival, so was quite astonished to see it rocking up in a Reading pub. Pitch black with a loose brown head and no carbonation. Smooth, thick, oily texture. Aroma and initial flavour of coffee and sweet treacle, with some dry smoke, plums and earth developing. Sweet with a very sticky finish. It’s OK, but for this ABV I’d expect more intense flavours, and it definitely needs something to cut through the syrupiness.

Cask at the Nags Head, Reading. Opaque dark coffee in colour with a ring of head with dark and light coffee highlights; rich deep aroma of coffee and treacle; complex flavour with sweet figs, bitter chocolate and strong coffee all mingling together very well; the finish is light and sweet with well hidden alcohol, and ultimately warming. Excellent.
