| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jun 12, 2008 Not bad. Spitfirish, but somewhat less so. No sign of citrus, but decently malty with plenty of body, the characteristic Shepherd Neame hop bite and smooth palate. A golden ale it isn’t but its a decent enough bitter. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 12, 2008 ASDA (to my knowledge this is Walmart in Britain) seems to have commissioned this brew at Shepherd Neame (brewer of such legends as ’Spitfire’ or ’Bishop’s Finger’ ...) ... Shepherd Neame do not hide the commissioning which is a good sign ...
the smell is distinctive, with malty, nutty notes dominating ... the taste is nutty too, with hints of green vegetables (leek, spinach) ... a pleasant bitterness makes this a recommended drink .... harrisoni (6830), Ashford, Kent, England
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 26, 2008 500ml bottle from Asda, Ashford. Amber with thin off white head. Why isn’t this golden? Bleached hop aroma with some toffee candy sugar. Some hop/malt balance in mouth. Some floral hop on finish. It’s alright. Got Shep’s yeast character. Can’t help but think that it’s a slightly tweaked Goldings Ale. Hop sting is pretty good on end, but only an ok bitter. berkshirejohn (1830), Bracknell, Berkshire, England
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Feb 15, 2008 <500ml bottle from Asda, Earley. Burnished gold with a thick cream head; typical Shep hoppy aroma - similar to Spitfire; slightly metallic malty body and a chewy finish. Not refreshing, and no trace of the promised citrus. Slightly disappointing. scotty (834), Scotland
| 1.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 2/5 | 3/10 | 2/5 | 7/20 | Jan 31, 2008 Burnt golden colour, patchy head, only small islands of bubbles. Poor nose, very faint, palate is robust but unbalanced. The finish is harsh, not a particularly nice brew! SilkTork (4184), Rochester, Kent, England
| 2.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 2/10 | 2/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Jan 4, 2008 500ml bottle from Asda. It’s not golden, but it is dusty. There’s a fair awareness of the hop dust in this - but, being pellets, the hops are not fragrant. Being pasteurised the stale bitter dust ends up tasting of dusty cardboard. It’s rather like a Czech lager - a pasteurised beer with little malt, but plenty of cardboard bitterness. Not a lot to recommend it, but it’s not THAT ugly either. I bought this little number from Asda - an Asda’s own, in fact, I would usually be suspicious of homebrand brews, but was aware (from Asda’s Gentleman Jack and Porter that Shepherd Neame produced Asda-own ales). So, this was good. A nice refresshy fruity, hoppy distincitive Shep flavour very bitter and just a tad smokey. Not to everyone’s taste, but it is to mine. Not dissimilar to Shep’s Early Bird. | 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 3, 2007 Aroma eventually musty hop, chalk and caramel with a hint of sulphur. Metal, hops, caramel, biscuit. Back-of-the-tongue unhoppy quinine bitterness. Some bitter orange, marmalade and shampoo. Soporific pasteurised supermarket ale with no glaring defects or anything to quicken the pulse....
