This ESB pours a medium copper color from the tap at the brewpub. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is bready and malty, touch of hops. A medium bodied ESB. The malts are caramel and sweet. The hops are earthy and floral, but kind of subdued. Could use a little more bitterness. Nice carbonation. Good balance. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Not bad, not exemplary but a very drinkable bitter. Detectable bitterness throughout, could have used a bit more maltiness, but decent. A great beer with the pizza.

Name: Rolands Red ESB
Date: August 13, 2005
Mode: Draft
Source: Brewery
Appearance: dark amber, frothy beige head, good lace
Aroma: good sweet carmel malt aroma with nice hops to balance
Flavor: flavor has a low bitterness leading to a nice finish, bigger carmel sweetness than the typical esb but it makes for a great drinking beer

Draft at APBC. Copper/red body with a thin white head, good retention. Aroma is caramel malt and mellow PNW and Fuggles hops, slight corn character mingling with the citrus. Flavor is sweet bready malts and sturdy hops, light but forward. Slight acidity and caramel in the well rounded finish. Very creamy palate and incredibly drinkable, this beer should be a contender in any competition. Not too similar to most ESB’s I’ve encountered, but very well done and worth the drive here if only to sample this beer.

Draught at the brewpub. Clear copper color with thin off white head. Soft malty caramel aroma and flavor. Maybe a touch of toffee too. Pretty solid.
