Commercial Description:
A good, clean nutbrown ale with a malty body. This is our most popular ale due to its smooth and malty flavor. We use a mixture of pale, crystal and black malts in this one, and our primary hop is Target, though we also add some Whitbread Goldings Variation as well. The Real Ale is best fresh, so fresh in fact, that it's great right out of the bright tank.

Dark brown, tan head. Flavor is roasts & smoke, perhaps a hint of chocolate. Light bitterness. Flavor seemed muted. Finishes dry, kind of watery. Nothing exciting, but still was good for some enjoyment.

Bottle. Dark pour. Aroma is roasted with a nice touch of malts. Flavor was a little, eh. Not bad, but nothing spectacular. I have to admit that it felt like it was really fresh, which for me is usually a plus, so I was happy with this one.

Thin head of fine bubbles. Light carbonation. Dry, ashy and smokey arome with some roasted grains and dark malts. Color is a a very dark crimson brown. Pretty impressive. Dry, astringent flavor with a bit more smoke and roasted grains. Little bit of peanut also. Finishes dry with a light bitterness. So so.

Rated 8/2/07. Dark mahogany color with purple hues. Fluffy, cream colored head that leaves behind decent lacing. It has a toasted, grainy aroma, with the faintest bit of indistinguishable fruity undertones. The aroma is not very strong at all. The flavor is of dry wheat, roasted barley, and hints of bitter fruits. Its really quite bland, as the drying grains dominate. The finish is boring and bitter. Somewhat watery body. Utterly bland and therefore not very good.

Had this on fresh off the tap at my uncle’s house in Maine, down the road from the brewery. Sat around drinking on a lake in the moonlight. Nice brown body, hazlenuts on the nose, light hops provide wonderful balance. One of my favorite beers ever... but it could be because I was having so much fun while drinking it.

Dark brown body with an off white head. Typical brown ale aroma. Roasted malt flavor with a little nuttiness, followed by a lightly roasted, lightly sweet, slightly biscuity finish.

The ale had a funny nose and lacked the depth of flavor I’m accustomed to in an ale. it seemed weak all the while the smell, appearance and head looked very good.

bottle. Pours an amber color with a tall, foamy head that hinders the pour a little bit. It fades away in a minute or two and leaves a nice little formation. The nose is pretty standard for a generic session ale. It’s got a bit of hops that seem kind of acrid, bread, and caramel. The flavor hints at chocolate and biscuits with acidity that reminds me of nut shells. It has a few characteristics of amber ales I think. Not bad, probably not something I will get often. Here’s a little rant: the commercial description says "The Real Ale is best fresh. . . ." What? So fresh that they don’t even put notches on the "best enjoyed before" chart? Come on. This one seemed okay though.
