Commercial Description:
A good, clean nutbrown ale with a malty body. This is our most popular ale due to its smooth and malty flavor. We use a mixture of pale, crystal and black malts in this one, and our primary hop is Target, though we also add some Whitbread Goldings Variation as well. The Real Ale is best fresh, so fresh in fact, that it's great right out of the bright tank.

12 oz Bottle-Poured a brownish/amber color w/a big, foamy, bubbly head & a ton of carbonation. Good lacing lasted thru the brew. Floral hop aroma. Crisp, clean hop flavor up front w/a nice malt finish. Traces of roasted nuts, & roasted malt. Easy drinking, not overly sweet. Seems more like an Amber than a Brown to me; they call it a Real Ale. Good mouth feel. Decent finish. Good balance. Thought this one was pretty good.

I really had a good feeling about this cat going in, since I definitely think I prefer real ale over the fake variety. However, the good feelings all but disappeared upon opening the bottle. An aroma not unlike raw sewage wafted from the head. I couldn’t believe a beer could smell that badly, but both of my tasting compatriots agreed. Oh well, this can’t be that bad, I thought. The flavor wasn’t that bad, to be fair. It did, however, have more of a grassy taste that reminded me of St. Pauli Girl Dark...not good. Save for the absence of hops, I believe a lager or pilsner lover would have felt right at home quaffing this stuff. It was tough to get down, but in true Ratebeer spirit I managed.

Not a real fan of brown ales, so my rating is probably skewed a little. Nice deep amber/brown color with a thin off-white head. Basic brown ale nose. Malty flavor with some roasted nuts. Not much hops at all...and a little sweet for me, but not as much as other I’ve had.

Bottle. Beautiful, full bodied amber that sits nicely below a frothy head of off-white foam. Melted pennies and old coins just about round out the smell. Cinammon-infused copper flavor, with a touch of roasted malt in the finish A slight hint of smoke appears in the background as it warms. Thin mouthfeel. Glad I only got one...

Been here before, bought the T-shirt, but never rated it. Draft at Capital Ale House. Deep amber, touch of ruby, slight creamy head. Aroma was faint, very faint, and hinted of malts. Fairly matly flavor, but dry, not sweet, with some nutty acorn flavors. Not a heck of a lot of hops at all, just enought to dry it out a bit more. Inoffensive.

Chestnut color with a mild hue of rudy when held to the light. Bone colored head that has a heavy lace, but a real plastic looking covering. Aromas of nuts, toasted malt and some DMS (green peas). Quite devoid of major flavors. Some mild sugar and light graham crackers with a dry floral finish. A touch too strong in ABV for a mild, but the flavors are there. Too strong a mild and not enough flavor for a brown.

Pours a brownish purple body with not much of a brown head. Smell is non-existent and gives no hint as to what this "Real Ale" is. Taste is very subtle, perhaps one of the most boring beers I’ve ever tasted. I cannot imagine anyone enjoying this. If I owned a brewery and was going to bottle something I produced, and ship it all over the country, I would at least give it flavor. I think if you left a Snickers bar floating in a glass of water for 6 hours, this is what the water would taste like. Terrible
