The aroma is caramel and toast with some very faint zest. The flavor is brown sugar, grassy hops, a finish of molasses or caramel, and a dry and lightly ashy finish. Straightforward brown ale, really. 2beerguys (299), North Shore, Massachusetts, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Nov 2, 2006 This ale pours a dark amber color with a small, light-brown frothy head. Fair lacing behind a mostly-diminishing head. Hazy, cloudy body. Aroma is of light, light bread malts and light doughy yeast. Initial flavor is lightly sweet, with a nutty taste, finishing lightly bitter with a smoky finish. Light on the palate, it leaves a watery texture with soft carbonation.
Reviewer’s notes: "Looks like a nutty brown, fizzles out at the end, initially a sharp taste due to carbonation followed by a sweet taste then a little bitterness of toasted malts" Braudog (3774), Dayton, Ohio, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 9/20 | Oct 26, 2006 Poured a dark brown with an immovable rocky head. Bit of a licorice aroma. Indeed the flavor is molasses, licorice, and malt balls. Didn’t quite hit it. frankenkitty (1903), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 25, 2006 Cola-colored under a creamy, tan head. Musty, roasty aroma with notes of beef broth and gingivitis. Mid-bodied with a malt-dependent flavor bordering on sweet. Latent bitterness is nutty. I expected more character and/or substance from a beer named "real ale".

I remember drinking this a lot a few years ago and was never impressed. I think they also toned down the carbonation for this beer as well- perhaps all their beers. Pours a nice bright amber with a fluffy sticky off white head. Aroma is soft caramel malts, and light fruity esters with some floral hops. Nice nutty and toasted malt flavor with more caramel and fruit. Good clean light bitter finish. Smooth aftertaste. Really good amber/brown ale. da845 (139), new york, New York, USA
