Appearance: Pours a deep brown with a small, foamy, tan head. Okay head retention.
Aroma: Caramel malt, light roasted notes, a little vegetal note. Just okay.
Taste: Sharp roasted notes are at the forefront followed by notes of earth, a touch of varnish, wood, and a little malt sweetness.
Palate: Medium-high carbonation with a medium, slightly thin mouthfeel. Medium, roasty finish.
Overall: An ale that features the qualities of roasted malt, but not much on the hop front. Highly sessionable, but a bit on the thin side. Worth a try. DeeBee21 (45), NH, New Hampshire, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Aug 25, 2009 Pour is a dark deep cherry color very thin off white head. Subtle aromas, very malty lots of chocolate nutty roast. Flavor is very thin as well. All I can get out of it is the chocolate and tobacco flavors. leaves the mouth feeling very watery. Not terrible but certainly nothing exceptional. Jblauvs (597), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 25, 2009 Dark Brown pour with a slight offwhite head. Aroma of crystal malt, a tiny bit of chocolate and some chalky fruitiness. flavor is a little thinner than the aroma, coffee bean, some mild tobacco and some sweet caramelly flavor. Not bad but a bit thin, not nearly as robust flavor wise as the best examples of this style. punkeedo (465), San Antonio, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Aug 3, 2009 2009 Bottle. This brew looks a lot like Coca-Cola with no head. Aroma of coffee and maltiness, which is encouraging. The flavor seems muted--not robust enough to match this aroma. Still, this beer would be good to accompany dinner. Would have preferred a little less carbonation too... Berley31 (198), New Brunswick, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 24, 2009 Bottle. Poured with a very small, off-white head that diminished quickly to a thin rim. No real lacing to speak of. Body was a rich, dark brown color, but very clear. Nice aroma of maltiness... some chocolate and perhaps caramel in there. Smooth and creamy on the palate, and medium-bodied, with soft carbonation. Nice, average-lasting flavor of malt... definitely chocolate tones in there. Tastes sweet at first... but actually finishes slightly bitter. An enjoyable brown ale that isn’t exemplary, but is definitely drinkable and a pretty good representation of its style. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jul 18, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours a brown color with a soft off-white head. Not much of a fragrance to the nose. But as it hits the mouth, flavors of chocolate and malt become apparent. Medium bodied. Seemed like a hybrid between a port and an ale but not as heavy. Not bad. bu11zeye (5564), Frisco, Texas, USA
