Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

Mild roasted barley aroma with hints of yeast. Cloudy brown color letting no light though. Medium brown fluffy head that dissipates. Strong malt flavor initially with light chalkiness. Tastes fades quickly in the middle to the finish. light lingering aftertaste. Light body for a porter.

12oz. Bottle: Dark brown body w/ a small light brown head that disappears fairly quickly. Very soft chocolate in the aroma, malts in general, not much else. First taste: Dark roasted coffee, a little nuttiness, some hops chillin in the finish. Pretty dry overall. Also left some very light lacing behind. Not bad, glad I grabbed one.

Bottle: Deep, dark reddish-black with just a thinnish tan head. The aroma is thick and chalky, mostly bitter baking chocolate. The promise of the aroma doesn’t quite live up to the olfactory promise. The name turns out to be apt, as this actually does have a hint of charcoal to it ... ashy, a bit of burnt coffee and the aforementioned bitter baking chocolates. Quaffable. (#3225, 11/29/2007)

Cutesy name and burnt chocolate flavor keep this attempt at a rich porter from being more than it truly is, a poser. It is NOT well balanced and not worthy of such a high score.

Pours thick with almost no head and very little carbonation. Its a dark, dark brown in color. It has a sweet faint malty aroma. The taste is like a good, dark stout with a strong aftertaste that is good too.

Bottle, shared by Papsoe. It poured unclear, brown, with a reddish hue and a bit small, beige head. Coffee, mocha, some chocolate and burnt malt in the aroma. Dryish in the mouth, with burnt notes, lots of malt, and mocha, finishing with a wee hoppy bitterness. Medium fullness. A nice beer, but it could use some more hops to balance it. (071005)

12 oz bottle from Broudy’s at Jacksonville Beach. Pours a moderate brown color with very little head. Aroma is light with cocoa and coffee. Initial flavor is bitter with a sharp finish, not a real smooth porter. Meh.
