Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

12 oz bottle from Broudy’s at Jacksonville Beach. Pours a moderate brown color with very little head. Aroma is light with cocoa and coffee. Initial flavor is bitter with a sharp finish, not a real smooth porter. Meh.

THOUGHTS: Not great when too cold. Aroma was nice, but weak. I wasn’t expecting much with this one, but was very surprised. I tried because someone who doesn’t like porters told me it was the only porter they ever enjoyed. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dard brown that looked black in the glass with red highlights and an average tan head that mostly diminished. The aroma was moderate mild coffee and light herbal hops. The initial flavor was lightly sweet, while the finish was moderately seet and moderately to heavily bitter with and average duration. The flavor was mostly coffe, finishing with bitter coffee blending with slight herbal hop bitterness. Incredible transition. The medium body was cremy, slighlty oily and a little dry with sof carbonation and a moderately asringent finish.

ridiculous carbonation, could only get half the bottle into my hennepin glass. aroma was malty and chocolatey, a little burnt. color was deep brown, head was off white and soapy. flavor was bittter...the burnt flavor was the dominant primary flavor, the secondary was awfully bitter. i didnt really enjoy this beer at all.

12oz bottle into pint. Pours dark brown with a medium tan head. Aroma was almost non-existent. Some malts but nothing strong. Flavors of coffee and some vanilla. Has a thin, light mouthfeel. Try as I did, I got nothing from this beer. Must have been an out-dated bottle...

Thin light brown head. Light carbonation. Roasty aroma with some smoke and malts. Nothing really stands out. Color is a very dark brown. Dry and chalky palate. Lots of roasted grains, little hops presence and bitterness. Lingering bitterness with some coffee notes at the finish. A decent porter.

Slow steady full pour yeilds a dark, dark brown beer with at mocha head that diminishes as expected. Nose is a mixture of vanilla an toasted toffee. Light, smooth boozy body that is strangely paralelled by the tingle of hops and dark crisp malts. Finish is a bit diluted.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights and a small short lived tan head that leaves some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, burnt coffee, and light caramel. Taste is moderately astringent roasted malt and coffee. Medium thin slightly watery mouthfeel with a medium amount of bitterness and moderate astringency from the roasted malt. A little rough around the edges but very drinkable.
