Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

Bottle. Pours a rich, thick brown/black with a nice olive-green head. Aroma of fresh roasted coffee and bitter chocolate is only tainted by a slight chalky note in the nose. Flavor is sweetened coffee with a bitter chocolate finish that forms a nice symbiotic relationship. A bit of autumn campfire lingers in the finish. Average mouthfeel. If not for the slight chalk in the nose and the only average mouthfeel, this would be a fantastic beer. Glad I opted for the sixer of this.

Very dark brown, near black, color. Smaller light tan head. Roasty aromas, with dark chocolate, dark toasted malt, rich toffee, mild coffee, dark brown sugar wisps of herbal hops. Nothing extravagant, but at least nothing objectionable. Light sugary sweetness is quickly snatched away by black malt and burnt coffee flavors. This one gets dry and bitter early and sticks around well past a welcome linger. A dry shell of a brew. Seems hollow and weak. I keep looking for more, but I’m not finding it.

Bottle. Tan average rocky head (mostly dissapating). Black body. Aroma burnt malts, black licorice, coffee, and unsweetened chocolate. Flavor is initially sweet and finishes with a touch of bitterness. Watery texture. Medium bodied. Lively carbonation. Average finish. This beer is okay-not great.

12 oz bottle. Poured black with very thin head. Aroma of coffee, some bitter chocolate, burnt malt. Flavor dark roasted coffee with bitter chocolate. More earthy than the koff porter I had earlier in the evening. Not as thick as I might have expected. Pretty good porter.

Pours solid black with a thin head. Very little aroma, maybe a bit of chocolate. Thin bodied. Acrid, burnt flavor with a marijuana note. Bitter finish.

12 oz. bottle. Rich coffee smell upon opening, close to a stout, if your ask me. Pours dark with garnet highlights at the bottom of my tall tumbler. Head is soda pop fizzy, even sounds like a soda. Burnt coffee aroma gets stronger in the glass. Tastes good, may actually a bit too strong for this style. Earthy and coffee-bitter. Tang of some American hops, but these are not very prominent. RB shows 15 beers with the "clever" name of Coal Porter, and this is the more widely rated, and a pretty good brew to boot.
