Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

12 oz. bottle. Rich coffee smell upon opening, close to a stout, if your ask me. Pours dark with garnet highlights at the bottom of my tall tumbler. Head is soda pop fizzy, even sounds like a soda. Burnt coffee aroma gets stronger in the glass. Tastes good, may actually a bit too strong for this style. Earthy and coffee-bitter. Tang of some American hops, but these are not very prominent. RB shows 15 beers with the "clever" name of Coal Porter, and this is the more widely rated, and a pretty good brew to boot.

NIce rich aroma, hints of coffee. Burnt malt flavor with some chocolate, and lingering bitter aftertaste. Good overall, but this is another porter that is a little too bitter for my taste.

Bottle. Roast and chocolate nose, sweet and malty. Body is a very dark red-black with a lacing light brown head. Dry roast taste with loads more chocolate than expected. Light sour notes, but on the whole a sugary sweet cocoa powder well-balanced by roast coffee bitterness. Aftertaste is one of the more chocolaty I know. Fullish mouthfeel, with a smooth body. Robust and nice and dark.

This is a nice porter. The pour was as can be expected. Dark black with a thin tan head that laced nicely. The best word for this beer is burnt. The aroma was burnt malt. The taste, as well, was burnt malt and coffee...the hoppy finish was there. Nice and bitter...and you guessed it...burnt. The flavor seems like it is being held back by something. Not bad by any means but there are better porters out there.

The beer is a nice solid dark brown, with a good inch of soft creamy tan foam. Good head retention and thick lacing. Very nice chocolate malt aroma. Dry, somewhat earthy, chocolate malt with a bit of dark roast coffee and a surprisingly generous amount cereal grain. Only a mild coffee flavor stays to the finish, where it combines with a thin hoppiness. These stick around into the aftertaste. Not quite medium body. Carbonation on the light side - no creaminess or even smoothness.

Poures a dark brown with a nice brwon head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts, some coffee. Flavor is roasted coffee, sweet malts, and chocolate. Finish is slighlty bitter. Not a bad porter, easily drinkable.

12 oz bottle pours black with a whispy head. Roast chocolate aroma, bakers chocolate flavors with a little coffee, roast and dry finish. Most porters i’ve had recently are too sweet, but these dry flavors emphasize the chocolate and coffee and make for a decent very drinkable porter.
