Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

My parents visited the Atlantic Brewing Company in Bar Harbor, Maine while on vacation last year (2006) and brought me back a 12 oz bottle of this beer and three others (Atlantic Bar Harbor Real Ale, Atlantic Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale, and Atlantic Mount Desert Island Ginger) ... Thanks mom and dad! -- Atlantic Coal Porter pours out a clear, cola color, but it looks opaque and dark brown in the glass. It initally has a medium creamy light brown head that recedes to a creamy, thin membranous crown. The aroma is roasted malt and some dark roasted coffee. The flavor isn’t as good as the aroma let on though. It is initially a disappointing blend of roasted malt extract and something fruity. Some alcohol also seems to be present in the taste. The finish is really good though and is more like the aroma (espresso-like roastiness and bitterness). It really helps to redeem the overall tasting experience for this beer. This beer has a medium body, but seems overly carbonated and can be thin at times. Overall I am a bit disappointed by the base flavor as it isn’t nearly as good as the aroma hinted at or as good as what’s packed into the robust finish. This beer definitely has some potential though... UPDATE: Actually, the overall all flavor seems to improve once this beer warms up some. It becomes more like the finish - roasty and dark (like coffee). Much better now!

Got a six pack of this porter as a gift. Not a bad brew, with hints of chocolate and coffee, yet it tends to have a fairly bitter finish.

The aroma is subtle witha coff, chocolate, hop note. The chocolate and pale malts come through in the flavor. the aftertaste is malty then metallic.

The aroma is chocolaty, acidic, and sweet with toasted malt. The appearance dark brown/red with a small head. The flavor is off but not as bad as some beers as old as this one. There is some chocolate and burnt malt but there is an acidic-bitterness that hangs over everything. The palate is soft. Chalk up another stale beer, thanks B.W.O.L!

Deep, dark ruby with light tan head. Toasted barley nose. Flavor is sweet and roasted caramel malts, lactose, coffee, and some subtle fruity hops to balance things out. Altogether very quaffable, but a bit light bodied at times.

Deep blackish-brown pour with a small tan head. Aroma is very roasty with lots of dark malts and some chocolate. Nice roasted malt taste with some dark chocolate present. Medium body with a pretty good finish and just enough hop flavor/feel to balance things out. Solid all-around porter.
