Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

My dad brought back a few bottles of this from Maine. This seemed much better than I remembered a couple years ago. I think they toned down the carbonation quite a bit to make this have a better mouthfeeel. Pours a deep brownish black with a beige head. Aroma of nutty toasted malts, chocolate malts, some caramel sweetness and light herbal hops. Nice full flavor for a porter, chocolat emalts, light roastiness, some more nuts, caramel, and toffee. Nice smooth finish.

Bottle: Pours a dark bown with a medium brown head. Smells of a bit roasted flavor, but by no means is it over powering. Taste is slightly of over roasted coffee, but only subtly. Nothing outlandish here, but a nice beer.

Pours black with a light tan head. Aroma smells of burnt/roasted grains and a touch of citrusy hops. The flavor has a lot of dry chocolate, hints of coffee and burnt toast, a touch of caramel sweetness, with fruity and bitter hops. The mouthfeel is nice - well carbonated (but not too much), very substantial mouthfeel but not particularly thick or syrupy. In the beginning and middle it is thick with some subtle sweetness, but finishes very dry and hoppy.

dark as dark can be ... but maybe I just need to improve the lighting in my house ... Sharp roast malt followed by bitter finish. Medium to slightly thin for stout body. Okay, but I’ve come to really enjoy nuanced stouts and this one seems to lack the depth of even some of the middle of the road stouts. Still I managed to enjoy this. (read - it’s okay)

bottle - Pours black, thin head, little to no carbonation visible. The aroma is mostly roasted malts. It tastes of roasted malt with some very mild hops and a touch of coffee. The flavor is too light, but okay. The finish is mildly dry and hoppy.

Bottle sampled with Stegosaurus. Pours dark with a tan head. Aroma of hops, Roasted malts, and chocolate. Flavor is weak, bitter, and roast. Ok beer, bad porter.

Pours a very dark brown almost black with reddish hues. The head is tan and has an aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. The flavor is roasted with some chocolate and little hops.
