Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

Any first impressions?
-A ring resides above the near-opaque black with brown highlights.
-Vanilla infusions and dry roastiness join for a sweet but never rich malty aroma.
-Nutty vanilla and crisp roastiness are slickly united in a wet mouthfeel.
-The slight bubbliness and thin body expose the lack of maltiness (for my tastes in porter).

What if you dig deeper?
-Molasses and brown rum reach the nose after a while.
-It finishes sweet and earthy, with subtle roastiness.
-A passable porter, far from the "hearty" and "rich" objectives they set out in their commercial description. 3.1/5

On tap in Bar Harbor.

Later, a bottled impression.
-Crunchy roastiness, citrusy hoppiness, and suave maltiness evolve into roasty and herbal bitterness, all linked by ongoing molasses.
-The mouthfeel is chewy, much more so than the tap version I had, aptly carbonated, and nourishing.
-A most interesting improvement on the first sample, this bottled form was a very flavorful and well-structured porter. 3.5/5

Bottle; no date notched.

Bought it on a whim, black body with soft brown highlights and a thin ring of head of creamy fiz, smells of sweet chococate, dry roasted flavor, bold presence of hops that cut through the dark malts, really a pretty decent and dry porter

Pours an opaque ruby cola into the glass, with no real head, retention nor lace. Roasted coffee, smoke and a hint of molasses (just a hint) to the nose. Tangy roast flavors, with smoky hop bitters to lead into the finish. The body is somewhat oily espresso, not much carbonation of which to speak. Coffee and smoke hang around for awhile, as well. Not the best in its class, but certainly a very nice brew.

(05.24.06) 12 oz brown bottle from DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL Poured opaque black with small off-white head. No discernable carbonation. Roasted malt aroma. Medium bodied porter that started dry with roasted malt flavor. Finished dry with light bitterness. Watery and monodimensional in flavor. Though not my favorite porter, this is a decent drinkable porter that goes well with food.

Bottle sampled with Beerded_one. Pours dark with a decent sized tan head. Aroma of roast, hops, and chocolate. Flavor is much like the aroma with a bitter finish. Good body, good brew.

Dark brown black beer, thin dark tan head. Nice sweet chocolate and toffee aroma. Some toast and herbal hoppiness. Flavour is also sweet and toasty, chocolate, some roast and a good amount of bitterness. Well-hopped (both bittering and flavouring). Earthy and slightly chewy. Dark chocolate, light roast and a long bitter finish. Nice beer.

This was a bit richer than I had anticipated. Welcome richness, though. This had lots and lots of chocolatey malt flavors which made for very mellow drinking. This is not one of the hoppy porters that I tend to like. It is malty, as it probably should be and does what it does well. Very good beer that I would not hesitate to give to really anyone.
