Pours a dark brown with no transparency and an insignificant off-white head. Chocolate presence throughout with light roasted malt. Moderate roasted coffee finish with some light piney hops. Okay, but there’s nothing that really stands out in this beer. bigrond (1054), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 7, 2005 Maine Brewers Festival 2005. Black body, medium khaki head. (3+) Moderate roast malt and very tiny hints of burnt chocolate and sweat sock like acidity. Acidity of the roast comes out more in the flavour. Touch simplistic but pleasant - frigid serving temperature didn’t help and I probably should have let it warm up a bit more but I was thirsty! Medium palate. billb (237), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 29, 2005 A slightly sweet and chocolatey aroma with a hint of alcohol. The aroma is a good indication of what’s to come. Malty and a bit nutty on the front with a very small alcohol and hop finish. The mouthfeel is a bit thin which is mildly disappointing for a porter. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to pour down the drain either. For something called "Coal Porter" I was hoping for something thick like coal tar. lamas (726), Adams Morgan, Washington DC, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 21, 2005 Bottle. Pours a VERY deep mahogany with a small light-khaki head. Incredibly roasty aroma. Lots of cocoa, black coffee, chocolate and malts in there. It actually smells a little like coal too! My girlfriend says it smells like duck turds. Smooth, thin body. Tastes salty, smoky and toasty. It’s like someone is smoking a cigarette right next to me. Not exactly what I’d call a pleasant taste. Earthy, soily body with a very dry finish. Weird and unique, but not necessarily something I would want again. jasonp (1513), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 15, 2005 Pours black (dark mahogany when held up to light) with a medium beige head. Roasty aroma with a touch of malted milk balls. Flavor has notes of chocolate, coffee, caramel, dark roasted malt and a light presence of hops. Has the right amount of sweetness, with a lightly bitter, roasty finish. The body is medium light with some creaminess and moderate carbonation. Not much lacing but pretty solid head retention. Good porter.
