Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

Black body with a slight hint of ruby. The aroma is coffee and some socks. The taste is slightly tart with chocolate and a hint of cherries. A relatively thin body. Overall, a fairly bland and boring porter.

12 oz bottle - pours dark brown with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is of roasted chocolate malts. Flavor pretty much falls in line finishes a shade on the sweet side. A robust porter medium bodied and creamy. Smooth to drink. Not bad better than I anticipated!

YUM! This smells of molasses and hops. Looks pretty nice in a glass dark brown with a thin white head that turns into a ring quickly. Flavor is where you’ll fall in love, this beer is fantastic. Molasses, chocolate, malt, and a slight hint of hops. Perfect balance for a porter. Great work Atlantic! Mouthfeel is perfect, creamy but not too creamy for a porter. This puppy is the real deal. Makes the anchor porter i had a few days back look like swill.

Coal Porter 12oz Bottle, no dating. Poured a very dark brown, with a tight foamy tan head. Aroma is caramel, chocolate, and a faint aroma of cola. WOW! taste is rich with notes of roasted caramel. There is an exquisite vanilla backbone and LOTS of bitter coffee. The mouth feel is very full, and the lingering taste is balanced, not to sour or sweet. I liked this and recommend it. well, years later, the mouth feel is thin, watery. But I still get lots of roasted caramel, not much vanilla?

Deep brown in color and medium viscosity with a fading, bubbly and grey head. Aroma is very chocolatey, cocoa powder, dry, fudge brownies, a little smoked and of chicory. Flavor smacks with the bitterness up front. A little acidic lean, but not in a bad way. It’s like dry coffee ground straight into your mouth. Chocolate aspects become more of an accent than a leading element. Waxy and alive body. Residual coffee chafing on the tongue and roof of the mouth. Phenomenal hops character overlays the chocolate malt base. Finished like a nearly burnt chocolate chip cookie. Another New England treat via tpkenned - thanks!

Sharp vinegary smeel fades into a roasty aroma that isn’t strong enough to comepletely stop the vinegar smell. Looks dark brown pouring, but settles to a deep black in the glass. Nice thick head. This is a thinner porter which is the first thing you notice, but the flavor is commendable. Very roasty and robust, but water thin on the palate. Some very mild choclate and stronger coffe flavors as you’d expect. Decent. Prolly pretty nice on draft, but just average on this bottle.
