Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

Dark brown colour. Chocolatey, nutty aroma with fudgey accents. Rich, chocolate taste. Decent body. Lots of nuts, toast, chocolate. Good balance. Very sessionable.

Draught. Deep dark brown with reddish tinge and stained glass lacing. Solid roasted malt aromas. Coffee. Hint of hazelnut. Dry and astringent body. Solid, decent, but boring.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, cream, and pretzel. Poured dark brown with a hint of ruby in color and a small tan head. Hazy. Very sparkling. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter flavor. Tastes of roasted malts, coffee, and some chocolate. Medium body. Average texture. Soft carbonation. Sweet roasted malt finish.

Draft at 3 Dollar Dewey’s in Portland - Poured a very dark black/brown with creamy tan head. Some lacing on the glass. Aroma was of darkly roasted malts and coffee/espresso. Flavor matched pretty close with some hints of chocolate. Some sweetness in the finish along with some hop bitterness. Average porter...

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown color, with a light tan head. The aroma is coffee, notes of bitter chocolate, and caramel. The flavor is a nice, pretty smooth chocolate and coffee flavors. It’s relatively sweet, and goes down pretty smooth.

I cannot believe how many beers are called "Coal Porter." In any case, this one pours a fine black with a medium, fairly dissipating but lacy cream head. Some notes of soy, coffee and licorice in aroma and flavour, although the taste is a bit thin -- somewhat burnt and woody, tiny bit of sourness, but mostly clean, some light hops. Pretty good, not exceptional.

Fairly dark color, no head, very nice flavors , some funky scents and odors, oil and rye and grass and tobacco but also somewhat unique. Bitter finish modest carbonation.

Tasted 5/13/08. 12oz bottle. Dark brown hue with an off-whiteh ring of head. Cocoa and chocolate nose. Touch woody. Undertone aromas of coffee toffee and syrupy. Medium bodied and smooth. Bitter and hoppy body. Good caramel malts. Nice coffee acidity. Medium effervescence. Resinous woody hops. Rolling palate. Bitter and tart. Sweet and toasty. Good toffee flavor. Once again, solid example.
