richlikebeer (747), Easton, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 25, 2007 ridiculous carbonation, could only get half the bottle into my hennepin glass. aroma was malty and chocolatey, a little burnt. color was deep brown, head was off white and soapy. flavor was bittter...the burnt flavor was the dominant primary flavor, the secondary was awfully bitter. i didnt really enjoy this beer at all.
hellbilly (906), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Oct 9, 2008 bottle BB march 2007? by way of beachbum25... pours a hazed ruby brown with a huge sandy coral colored head. the cap is enormous, frothy and very light/airy. the foam actually works it’s way out of the bottle as the sediment at the bottom is swirled. the aroma is definitely malty with some chocolate, toasted nuttiness close to coffee, a bit grassy and a spiciness that tingles the nostrils. the flavor is much the same only the hops are noticeably floral and spent pine. there’s a light acidity and bitterness throughout with a dry peppery finish. the aftertaste is of chewed up multi vitamin pills. medium body. when sloshed around the carbonation builds up and actually fills my mouth with foam. malrubius (455), USA Oct 6, 2008 12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Dark brown/black with lasting flat head and some lace. Roasted chocolate and chocolate chip cookie aroma. Nice bitter roasted chocolate dark fruit with a dry bitter chocolate finish. Medium body and medium carbo. Very nice sessionable classic porter. I could drink this all night. BelgianBeerGal (977), Sabbatical in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Sep 26, 2008 Bottle in Bar Harbor. I thought this was a great porter, am I out to lunch? I though the aroma and flavour was well developed with chocolate, coffee and just enough hops to balance everything out. I really liked it. daknole (844), Plantation, Florida, USA Sep 26, 2008 Bottle from beachbum25. pours a super dark brown with a puffy tan head. This bottle actually was overcarbonated a bit. Aroma is very roasty and toasty with chocolate notes. Flavor is dry and roasty. Some hints of chocolate and a hint of hops as well. Decent porter. shalloWMeans (145), Florence, Kentucky, USA Sep 22, 2008 An oily dark body and a medium-sized, thick caramel colored head characterize the appearance. Roasty, oaky, slightly smoky aroma, backed by nutty cocoa and a gentle, fruity, blackberry and grape soda undertone. Plenty of character in the taste- again, a coal-like roasty smokiness, an ongoing, lively carbonation, and a very complex bitter chocolate and hop dryness. Great medium to full-bodied texture, grainy and bittersweet (almost like a dark brown ale), with strong roasted coffee notes appearing late in the taste and lingering long into the drying, satisfying finish. A very nice porter, as jazzy as the musician for whom it was named.
