Peaty. Thick. Not very sweet. Roasted and dry. Bitter. Didn’t like it much. Goodgrief (1161), Middletown, Delaware, USA

Happy to get my hands on this, the experiment sounds good, at least in theory. Sweet chocolate-and-mocha aroma, light peaty smoke with only a faint herbal note and a touch of alcohol. Loaded with malt. Pour is a muddy, 95% opaque dark brown body with a lacing, soapy light brown head. Light peat, smoke, molasses, and grape taste, with lots of caramel and a just a little gritty toffee. Some nice, but faint, earthy bitterness, and a delicate herbal tone somewhere in the bg, which does have a heatherish ring, but could just as easily be confused with juniper, as far as I’m concerned. Passing whiff of a long-gone hæð-stapa, nothing more, and mostly in the aftertaste. Chocolate notes are turned down significantly, but the underlying scotch ale is of a high grade. Medium-full body is deceivingly viscous and coating, but it’s not the sort of drenching, soaking type I was looking for. Alcohol seems to be about half of the listed 7.8% abv. A good one! kmweaver (2493), Sebastopol, California, USA

Pours a clear, dark amber-brown color; minimal off-white head. Caramel and brown sugar in the aroma; a good bit of smoke / charred malts. Medium mouthfeel: brown sugar, caramel, and some light pepperiness upfront; mild carbonation; roasted malts and undeveloped sugars. Medium, sticky sugar and burnt caramel in the finish. vyvvy (2068), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA

The aroma has bread, toffee, dark red grapes and caramelized malt. Medium rich body that gets thinner with semi-sharp carbonation. The flavor starts with toasted caramel malt, spices and herbal traits. The finish brings out the heather along with some dryness and green tea. Decent beer. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 2, 2007 Bottle: Deep brown pour with a reddish hue and a creamy light tan head. Aroma has some roasted caramel malt, metallic suggestions, light tobacco and a subtle lavender hint. Nice creamy and mild carbonation. In the flavor there’s a pleasant soft malt presence, which is both slightly sweet and rich, as well as toasted and earthy. It’s also mildly smoky, with hints of tea leaf, dark caramel and a slightly minty presence when it warms. Some roasted tobacco notes in the mildly peppery finish. A creamy and tasty Scotch Ale.
