Commercial Description:
A refreshing wheat beer spiced with fresh ginger root. The process of making this wheat beer has been nicknamed "special ginger tea", due to the fact that we add over 20 lbs. of fresh ground ginger root into the boil. We use pale malt, and wheat, as well as Target and Whitbread Goldings Variation hops to flavor this light, summer ale. Island Ginger is particularly popular during the warmer summer months, though thanks to the ginger kick it has, it would also be warming in the cold winter months.

(12oz bottle) Small off white head atop a clear amber body. Aroma is medium sweet, ginger, peach, some cereal. Taste is medium sweet, ginger, some cereal, light herbal bitterness. Light body, some crispness.

Any first impressions?
-There is decent foam retention to cover the transparent tan golden.
-Humble cereal sweetness topples ginger in the nose.
-Gingery fruitiness collaborates with the caramel/cereal sweetness.
-The well-constructed body remains quaffable due to the lively carbonation.

What if you dig deeper?
-A furtive citrusy hop bite dries off the ending.
-Wheat plays an important role here, and keeps the beer far from the gimmick zone.
-A decent meal accompaniment, or estival quencher, this ginger beer won’t wow most but will surely please those looking for novelty.

Bottle; no date notched.

Ginger taste was better than I expected. Wheat taste and body is fine for a summer brew. Part of a variety pack at World Market.

12 oz bottle that my parents brought back from maine- purchased at the brewery in Bar Harbor so I know it is fresh. Pours a very hazy yellow with lots of floaities and no head but a decent carbonation. Aroma is ginger upfront, although not as overpowering as it used to be a few years ago, along with some herbal and spicy hops, and light citrus notes probably all coming from the ginger. Flavor is actually slightly like a ginger ale soda, with some natural ginger flavor, some light piney hints, and a light bready wheaty body. Ends out clean and dry. Nice easy to drink beer- could probably only get through 1 of these though.

My Sam Adams patriot collection box came with two root beers and no ginger, so I’m drinking this to make up for it. I love a good ginger all (non-alcoholic, soda kinda), but this just isn’t working at all for me. The ginger flavor is light but noticable, but unfortunately it is sitting on top of a miserable american wheat that is way too husky, dry, and dead. In all honesty, if I wasn’t told this has ginger in it, I doubt I’d actually notice. The crappy wheat is just too strong. I wouldn’t call it particularly light, either, even though they refer to it as such.

Cool name. Had it a North River Tavern, Atl. Golden in color. White foamy head. Aroma of freshly ground ginger. Very refeshing with some hot wings. Ginger taste is al the way through this beer.

(12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with goldtwins, thanks Larry!) Ginger beers rarely ever a beverage I enjoy because, well, I just don’t care for ginger root. But maybe they’re growing on me because this one seems pretty drinkable to me, though that’s not synonymous with enjoyable. All I seem to get out of this beer is sweet, spicy ginger in the nose and on the tongue, and the ginger has significantly more presence than most other ginger brews. The ginger is fairly bitter as well, especially in the finish, and while that helps to break up the sweetness, the bitterness is actually a detractor for me. Body is medium with good carbonation. Amber in color with only the slightest bit of haze. The attractive, half-inch of off-white head on the pour dissipates within ten minutes or so -- not even a ring of head and no lacing. Very flavorful, lots of ginger, but I suspect this is one of those acquired tastes I’ll never acquire.

gold color. floculent in colloidal suspension. peaked creamy white head. smells like peaches - and ginger. ... and mary ann. big ginger flavor. a wheat ale. ginger is the middle flavor, with jasmin leading off and wheat taste closing. complex herbal tea aroma. ginger numbs the mouth slightly. slight lemon taste throughout. the ginger is strong and pleasant - perfect to drink with sushi?
