Hawksfan17 (717), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 17, 2006 Pours a hazy orange gold. Smells of sweet, spicy ginger. It has a nice plain wheat flavor that is followed by a slight ginger aftertaste. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA May 22, 2006 Bottle from State Line. Dark straw pour with smallish head. Aroma of soapy ginger root and sesame oil coupled with hopcitrus. The flavor was malty, gingery, with back end hops. Unique, and worth quaffing again if I see it locally, although not by the case. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA May 17, 2006 Pours a hazy dark macro yellow with an insignificant head. Smells ambitious. Sushi ginger! Even has that slight pickled sort of smell that I guess might be coming from the alcohol, there’s also a certain sweetness. This is smooth in the mouth with a warming not coming from the alcohol, but rather from the ginger I think! That wheaty feel is there, but short of the aftertaste, the wheat just doesn’t make itself known. This is really just like drinking sushi ginger. Huge ginger flavor with a bit of sweetness (just like sushi ginger). There’s a touch of light malt inthe background and a bit of english hops peaks out from the back of the main flavor. The aftertaste is wheaty, and of course, the ginger is inescapable. I wouldn’t get this beer again, but damn, this is something unlike anything else I’ve ever drank--bonus overall point for that one. tcruicks (282), Bloomington, Indiana, USA May 17, 2006 This is an average looking orange-yellow beer with a small white head (large bubbles). This beer is for someone who really likes ginger. It just overwhelms the flavor and aroma. Its definitely an interesting beer, and maybe fun to try, but just hard to drink a full glass. Sweet and tart. The mouthfeel is a bit harsh- maybe its the carbonation. HighGravity (890), Baltimore, Maryland, USA May 13, 2006 I assume that the ABC’s beers are made by Shipyard. Essentially, this is an American Wheat fermented with Ringwood and flavored with ginger. That’s a combination that under most circumstances that would make me sick, but this beer is at least adequately refreshing and I can see where it may even be good with a spicy curry. edden (927), cow- lumbus, Ohio, USA Feb 24, 2006 2/23/06: Bottle. Bright orange-yellow body with no head/lace. Ginger aroma. Flavors include hop, ginger, and spice. Bitter finish. dp (512), uniontown, Ohio, USA Feb 24, 2006 A sweet aftertaste that turns not unpleasantly sour. think of a type of applesauce with ginger rather than cinnamon. Could see drinking this under the christmas tree. goodbye gingerbreadman, hello island ginger. TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA Jan 28, 2006 This is a wheat beer by style, that is spiced with fresh ginger root. It is brewed with pale and wheat malts, then hopped with Target and Golding hops. Now here is where it get interesting. During the boil 20lbs of fresh, ground ginger root is added, giving this already outstanding beer, another dimension. Fresh ginger root is pungent in aroma, and hot and spicy on the palate. Novices to ginger being used in a beer might be shocked, but I can assure you it is a very pleasant surprise.
Island Ginger pours to a beautiful, bright, deep golden color with a thick white head and a lively carbonation. The nose on this beer is fantastic with a potent punch of spicy ginger aroma. The palate is firm with a really nice tart, thirst quenching wheat character paired with a very apparent hot and spicy ginger flavor. Island Ginger finishes with more tart wheat malt up front, then ends with a spicy ginger heat that warms and tickles the throat as it goes now.
A fantastic beer just perfect for the warmer months, and a phenomenal beer to match with Asian inspired fare such as Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, or Indian.
