Commercial Description:
Bottled (pasteurised).
NOTE: Only ratings for the bottled version here. The cask version has a separate entry.
Nimbus Strong Pale Ale (5.0% abv) resembles the famous Kölsch beers of Cologne: pale in colour, soft in mouthfeel, but strong in alcoholic content. Our rendition has a rich, warming hop and a memorable malt character.
A small addition of around 5% malted wheat to the grist gives this beer much of its body and softness.
The aroma is of pronounced fresh-fruit hops, together with a sweet nuttiness. On the palate this beer has a verdant, almost vegetal, hop presence. Nimbus also exhibits lovely malt character of fresh bread and almonds.
This beer has understated power: delicate, complex and more-ish despite its relative alcoholic strength.

Bottle 500ml. @ home.
Light unclear medium yellow orange color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, toffee, moderate hoppy, citrus - orange, grapefruit juice, grass. Initial flavor is moderate sweet, finish flavor is moderate sweet and moderate to heavy grapefruit bitter with a long to average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft. [20091020]

50cl bottle, with label as pictured - but the bottle itself is now dark brown. Pours a clear yellow golden with big, frothy, creamy white head with splendid retention and generous lacing. Rather pretty, in fact. Fairly strong aroma of malt, floral notes, citrus and hops. Very moderate carbonation, smooth, full mouth feel. Medium-bodied blonde. Flavour is stronger than that of most blonde ales - malt is again noticeable, but it’s the hops that dominate with their citrusy notes. Sweetness and bitterness are nicely balanced, and the medium bitter, dry hoppy finish makes for a most refreshing brew.Hoppy taste lingers on long after you’ve downed the beer. A most pleasant non-continental blonde, superior to many German or Czech lagers and exports that I’ve drunk over the years. Its full, smooth taste reminds me of Samuel Adams Lager. Despite the rather high price tag (€3.5 for a 50cl bottle) I will order this one again!

Bottle, at Cardinal. A clear, golden beer with a small, off-white head. Citrusy, grassy hops with some tea notes in the aroma, not much malty footprints here. The flavor has some pale malts in the background, with citrusy, slightly tea-like flavors up front, and a pleasant bitterness going into the finish. Medium body. An easy drinkable typical British beer that wont impress or upset anyone. 090728
