12/27/2007: Atwater Mai-Bock Specialty Lager is a hazy golden color and is very active with loads of carbonation. The off-white head errupts out of the glass and produces tons of lasting foam as well as a good amount of foamy lacing. This beer has a sweet, generic beer aroma. The flavor is really, really sweet with some honey and a strong malt presence. Otherwise, it just has a general beer with a slight spicy bitterness in the finish. The alcohol is not overtly present in the flavor (that is a good thing and surprising since this is a fairly cheap 7.5% alcohol beer). The body of this beer is medium-light, but not fizzy on the palate. It is sweet and sticky on the lips though. Overall it is not too bad for a Heller Bock.

12 fl. oz. bottle (7.5% Alc. By Vol.) from Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #25 for this beer...

Bottle from Party Town. Poured a hazy amber with a large frothy off-white head that mostly lasted and produced good lacing. Average sour citrus aroma. Medium body with soft carbonation. Medium sweet malt flavor with a medium fruity sweet finish of average duration.

Hazy golden coloured body with a very dense slightly off-white head and a billion bubbles rising from the sides of the glass. Aroma of fresh malt, lemons, nuts, candy corn and a bit of apple cider vinegar. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour with a big bunch of wheat and musty german (low a.a.) hops comes quick after the sip. Aftertaste shows more mellow characteristics: some lemons, nuts and a mild sweetness fades to pale malt. Overall, a decent beer - a bit strange and strong up front...but give it a bit of time and it shows more. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased at Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 25 October 2007.

Sampled on draft at the Rivertowne Pub in North Huntingdon PA this beer poured a dark golden-amber color with a small white head. The aroma was light sweet, and tangy malts with a hint of fruitiness. The flavor was tangy, malty and slightly fruity with a hint of hops and bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel was fairly thick.

Poured a dark gold with a creamy white head, aroma of malt, bread, sweet, faint hop floral and honey fragrances, a sour bite, little sweetness, some malt flavor, not much malt flavor or sweetness, no bread flavors, the flavors were not in line with what my nose was telling me, disappointing, this was lacking in malt and sweet flavor, appeares to be more sour bitterness then 24 IBUs, medium mouth feel, this might have been an old bottle, how long does a Mai-Bock stay fresh for? for now I would not recommend, I will try more next Spring to see if it is better.

A nice sweet honey nose is a pleasant beginning. Flavor is also honey but with a few other things going on, none of which are pronounced. A bit of caramel, some bread and spice can be detected with some concentration. An effervescent feel is the best part of the beer. It lights the top of the tongue up. More malty sweetness shows up as the beer warms.
