SturmWulf (63), USA Dec 21, 2007 Aroma of vanilla, hint of chocolate, coffee, roasted malt. Poured a dark mahogany brown. Had a nice foamy, light tan head that quickly dissipitated. Left light lacing on the Pint Glass. Beer had no cap after the head was gone. Flavor of vanilla that was quickly overcome by a strong softly bitter coffee with hints of chocolate and roasted malt with vanilla coming back at the end. The bitter coffee flavor seemed to increase as I drank it, a bit too strong for me, but that is me, those who like a strong bite or strong bitter in their beer will enjoy this.
Body was a light to medium, with a slightly thin texture, carbonation started strong but died down quickly to become weak. A strongly bitter finish. A nice Porter, especially if you like coffee. While I liked the beer, I wouldn’t buy again for its just not my style of Porter. But, if you like strong coffee and strong bitter flavor in your Porters, do give this a try!
Crockett (903), Steelback County, Ontario, Canada Oct 8, 2008 I’ve had a few of these odd porters which claim "they are supposed to taste like that" (Think kuhnen creme brulee).
Nose of sour milk and sour cherries. Coca-Cola pour with a short lived tan head. Beer was quite spritzy with a very light body. No more coffee flavour than I would have expected in a regular old porter. Quite a bit of apple and some tangy tropical fruit which is odd. The Vanilla never really showed up for me in any pronounced fashion. Somewhat short mineral thin finish. Not quite living up to expectations. I was looking forward to this. It’s too bad. HDane (81), Chesapeake, Virginia, USA Sep 28, 2008 Pours dark with a MASSIVE head. Nose isn’t too bad - mostly coffee. Flavor is disgusting - way too sour and bitter for "vanilla java". Down the drain! blipp (818), Grand Island, New York, USA Sep 25, 2008 Bottle. Pours deep brown with a tan head. The aroma is all coffee beans, maybe a hint of vanilla. The body is much thinner than I expected. The flavor is again, all coffee beans, very artificial tasting. Not bad, it’s at least drinkable. BeerBaron617 (153), Novi, Michigan, USA Sep 21, 2008 I had this in the bottle at Ashley’s in Westland, MI. I was unimpressed with this brew. It was watery, and the flavor wasn’t even close to the description. I’ve ranked it low, just because I expected a lot from this beer, and I was disappointed. Oh well, you win some, and lose some. Cheers! StFun (339), Indiana, USA Sep 13, 2008 I was pretty stoked about this one when I grabbed it, but was pretty let down. Vanilla Java Porter sounds awesome, but both the vanilla and java are weak, and the porter is thin and watery. Basically just weak, dry, and slightly bitter. Almost like a Guinnes, and not in a good way.
