Nice aromas of spicy hop and dark fruit. Medium body with very vigorous carbonation. Tastes of brown sugar, burnt caramel, and some low level spice. Makes the mouth tingle. Finishes brown sweet, but not sickly so, the burnt malt bittering a mediation. Still think there is spice, but can’t pin that down. It is a very tasty lager. Foam head with lacing. Dark brown and malty a little roast. Rather even malt body but a little burnt bitterness and thin. Good carbonation throughout, Ok. SpringsLicker (2043), Tennessee, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Aug 3, 2008 One bottle from JB at the Islands. Deep brown with nice reddish hues and a very long lasting head. Aroma was not that strong, just dark malt with a bit of toast. Flavor is malty, with some drying bitterness on the finish. Alcohol is noticeable at 1st. Then just blends in. Oh yea. phishpond417 (1953), Madison, Wisconsin, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jul 28, 2008 Nice beer. It pours a very dark chocolate colour with a reddish hue. The head is slight with a tan colour, leaves behind very attractive lacing. Aroma is nutty, hint of oak and possibly a little bourbon as well. Mouthfeel is suprisingly lighter then what i expected, but pleasent regardless. Slightly bready, maybe maple syrup is what i taste also. Flavors are all around very well balanced and enjoyable, but i expected more of a thicker texture from a HG brew. JCB (1767), Durham, North Carolina, USA

Was jonesing for something sweet and malty, and a doppelbock seemed just the thing. Alas, this murky brown failure was not what I’d hoped. Thin body, almost no carbonation, and a minimal, cardboardy aroma. There are actually almost no malts detectable in the taste. It’s more like the shitty green tea you get in bad Chinese restaurants. Must be an infection, I guess, but this sucks. Butters (1652), Virginia, USA
| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 3/10 | 3/5 | 4/20 | Jul 22, 2008 Pours a clear dark brown with light brown highlights and good light tan head. Smells sweet and sour with huge molassis, anise, and some cinnamin. Flavor has some doppelbock qualities, but one big thing prevails: INFECTION. Very early stages of infection (small ring of doom starting to form on the bottle). I’ll certainly try this one again, but atwater needs to look into this. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 17, 2008 Bottle purchased at Corral Liquors in Granite City, IL. An explosive gusher, it pours 1 part cloudy mahogany liquid and 4 parts towering, sticky, fluffy, beige head. The nose seems more like a schwarzbier than a doppelbock: chocolaty bread dough, light caramel and a ton of yeastiness. Light to medium-bodied and creamy-slick with a mildly dry finish. The flavor pretty much follows the nose. An interesting interpretation of the style, but it reminds me more of Mönchshof Schwarzbier than any doppelbock that I’ve ever sampled.
