Dark ruby beer, with a huge, frothy, off-white head that lasts - the aroma is a little metallic and coppery, but there are complex notes of date, raisin, and toffee underneath, as well as a little doughy character - a nice balance of caramel sweetness and an almost coffee-like bitterness - a little bit of raisin and black cherry - the finish gets a little thin and unnecessarily bitter, but it’s still fairly nice - a decent doppel.

12 oz. bottle, shared by DarkElf, from World Beer Cup 2008. Pours burnt umber color with brick highlights when held to light. Malty and herbal aromas, burnt molasses, dandelion milk, a bit of earth. Roasty and malty, more of the herbal notes, alcohol somewhat hidden, nutmeg and spice. Medium to full body, crispy-creamy carbonation.

Pours black with a fine, white head. Strongly malty, sweet, clean aroma. Flavor is chocolate, kind of waxy flavor with a strong caramel quality. Lighter mouthfeel.

Sample @ WBE: Pours a syrupy brown. Tastes of caramel, maybe some toffee, a bit buttery, with some vanilla undertones. Interesting.

Although a good dark color, foamed up a lot and had virtually no taste. Not offensive, but not good at all. Labeled as a doppelbock, this is a disappointment.

Bottle. Aroma hops on light choco/caramel with strong spaghetti funk (which I’ve come to associate with certain strains of yeast, am I right?). Deep ruby body tends to brown, with a tanned, tiny-bubbled rocky head. Medium-dry, musty and slightly funky (v.s.), with toffee, caramel, nuts, a hint of fig. Touch of cherry in the back, and some lightly smoked/peaty malt which really grew on me after an ounce or two. A slight bit of sweetener. Medium body with a tangy, dark aftertaste. Alcohol very, very well hidden. Not terribly German, but a pretty good American dark lager.
