Pours dark ruby with a mostly receding tan head. Aroma of vinous malt, toffee, caramel malt, plums. Taste is lightly sweet, vinous, crystal malt, chocolate. Full bodied with moderate carbonation.

Bottled. Poured a deep, healthy brown with a creamy cap of beige head. The aroma picked up rich, toasted caramel and sweeter chocolates with a bit of molasses.. sweet overall, and it masked the booze perfectly. The flavor had caramel, chocolate, and molasses at the core with herbal bitterness and warmth at the back.. nice balance, but not too much exciting/interesting character to it.. still tasty, though. Creamy, heavier carbonation on the palate with lots of sweetness.. again it masked the alcohol well. Best beer I’ve had from these guys, by far.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with red poking thru. Small tan head. Aroma is big roasty chocolate and malts. Flavor is burnt cocoa malts, hints of smoke. A little bitterness in the finish. I liked it.

On tap at HDG. Doesnt support much of a head. Aroma is like Cocoa Puffs. Flavor isnt is basically the same with the "licking an ashtray" taste.

Tap at Barcade: Pours deep brown with a tan head. The nose is full of roasted dark malt and coffee grinds, kinda dirty. The flavor is overwhelmed with coffee character. The bitterness towards the finish leans toward a metallic feel. Not much character or balance.

Bottle: This pours deep and dark ruddy brown with a towering pile of foam, rocky, and resilient. The aroma is shy, hard to coax out from beneath the big ol’ blanket, but it hints at dark roastiness. Indeed this goes to the palate with a big rich malt character, some brown sugar and a nice light bittering finish. Bring on some nice roasted pork. (#3328, 2/18/2008)
