The aroma is shy, hard to coax out from beneath the big ol’ blanket, but it hints at dark roastiness. Indeed this goes to the palate with a big rich malt character, some brown sugar and a nice light bittering finish. Bring on some nice roasted pork. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 4, 2008 Deep brown with nice reddish hues and a very long lasting head. Clear and gorgeous. Aroma was not that strong, just dark malt with a bit of toast. Flavor is cleanly malty, with some drying bitterness on the finish. Not cloying, and really not all that bad. Alcohol really well masked. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 3, 2008 The color deep amber/brown. The head was creamy, thick, light beige, and laced some. The aroma was, as emacgee said, tobacco. Ther was also some hints of soda and sweet matl. The flavor was sweet malt, light mustyness, and some spice. The palate was average. The finish was clean. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 3, 2008 Bottle. Dark ruby-brown pour with a tall creamy tan head. Aroma is candyish with lots of sweet malts. This smells like a dessert! Taste is very malty with lots of caramel, candy notes, brown sugar and nuttiness. Slightly toasty in spots. Body is medium-full and has a creamy carbonation. Rather chewy as well. Ends with more caramel, sweet malts, candy notes and nuts. The end of this was the only thing that was sub par. Very nice dopplebock, though you can’t really drink too many of these without getting hammered. Dogbrick (2901), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 29, 2008 Sample at Gallo’s Taproom in Columbus. Pours dark brown with red around the edges. Thin and creamy beige head that dissipates quickly, and spotty lacing. Aroma of sweet malt and dark fruit. Medium-bodied with flavors of caramel malt and toasted nuts, plus some hops. ABV is well-masked. The finish is mildly roasty with a grainy malt aftertaste. Just average overall. JPDIPSO (4932), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 23, 2008 Dark brown color with no real glints of color when held to the light. Lightly roasted malt, mocha and dark caramel dominate the aromas. My first thought was to check the label to see if this was brewed with some coffee. Taller head that subsides to a 1/4 inch lid of foam with some residual lace after the first pour. The scent dies down significantly as well, with a just some caramel and dark brown sugar hanging around. Full and lightly silky feel. Flavors of dark caramel and lightly scorched malt. The scorched malt does drive the finish and the linger. Some traces of dark chocolate and candi in the middle. Lacks the malt depth needed for a good bock and especially a doppelbock. Another strong dark american lager, not that there are that many out there, but there is some consistency with these efforts out there. tomaroth (31), Troy, Michigan, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 20, 2008 I like this beer, but it could use a bigger nose. Carmel and syrupy. Strong ABV, but it is not apparent in the flavor. Had it at Atwater. MrChris (110), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 6, 2008 Smallish caramel nose. Almost totally black in appearance. Foamy tan head, nicely done. Full toasted caramel flavor with sweet syrupy ending. Frothy medium full smooth on the palate. This brew looks more robust than it taste. A fine Dopple Bock that hides its alcohol very well.
