Commercial Description:
This is a dopplebock high-gravity lager. This one is big, black and sweet. It’s malty character is derived from two caramel malts along with Munich malt to create the smoothest high-gravity beer this side of the pond.

Bottled. Gassy carbonic tangy aroma, metallic, undercut by sweet malty rich character. Light acidic hoppiness. Paper. Dark brown clear, huge foamy rocky lacing light tan head that persists. Not quite a gusher when pouring, but it really foams up on you. Medium bodied with pretty high carbonation. Tingly on the tongue, with a bit of carbonic burn going down. Starts with light acidity, gassy tang. Decent malty richness evocative of a doppelbock, but a bit thin. Mild cocoa and smoky notes, with bitter nutty character toward the finish. Mild sweet finish, with nutty dryness and light hoppy bitterness to end. Light alcohol taste, which is a bit suprising considering the gravity. Not a bad beer, but the odd stale gassy aroma in the foam and the fact that it almost is a gusher detracts. Too heavy on the carbonation, too.

Nice cola coloured body with a very very thick brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, raisins and toffee more than anything else. Medium-bodied; Strong bubbles on the front end, fading to a very nice roasted malt and hop flavour with a good dose of pit fruits and nuts shortly after. The aftertaste shows peanuts, a light spiceyness and even some raisins and figs. Overall, a good doppelbock - better than I was expecting, but not stellar. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 25-November-2007.

Blah. Mothball, raisin and stewed smoked malt nose. Sweet and moldy up front, sickly and heavy old ashtray and char, turning wet, damp and cold. This is not good and does not deserve any more writing. Know that.

dark with a robust tan head. nice chocolate malty aroma. flavor predominately chocolaty, but carries a nice fruit malt balance. Hides the alcohol nicely. A good doppelbock.

12 oz bottle. Dark burgundy brown with a dense, oaty head. Held up to the light it looked like a sno-globe with active carb keeping the abundant bits swirling around. Nose is dusty cocoa powder, prunes and dough. Medium body with residual gelatin and a light tang. Taste is watery molasses and butterscotch. Weird.

10/29/07: Bottle.
Raisin nose. Deep roasted red-brown body with an almond colored head which clings to glass. Flavor of sweet malt and fruit (plum). Finish is a bit roasted.

bottle from WF. Jet-black, thin film of pale creamy head. Is this some sort of schwarzbier/doppelbock mashup? aroma is surprisingly mild considering the abv: some figs and caramel, but that’s about it. full bodied, caramel and sweet port-like flavor fades into a finish that is entirely too sweet. alcohol is hidden pretty well, but it’s just too much sickly sweetness up front.

Mahogany body under a weak tan head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, dried fruit, roasted nuts. Medium body. The flavor was somewhat sweet, finishing with an earthy bitterness. The ABV is well masked. Not bad.
