Commercial Description:
This is a dopplebock high-gravity lager. This one is big, black and sweet. It’s malty character is derived from two caramel malts along with Munich malt to create the smoothest high-gravity beer this side of the pond.

Clear ruby body with a small tan head. Sweet molassas and caramel aroma. Dry molassas, caramel and dark malt flavor. Bitter finish. Medium-full body.

Much too sweet! Some carmel flavor in (far) background. Very dark brown color. Thin body for a Doppelbock.

Bottle; dark brown color with quickly diminishing head. Aroma was good with caramel, chocolate, and dark fruit notes. Good palate; slight creaminess. General sweetness throughout. Flavors were similar to the aroma. Alcohol was well hidden for me. Not amazing, but definitely enjoyed it.

Looks and starts out really well. Creamy head and palate. There is a bit too much of an odd sourness in the aftertaste. I like the graininess that is evident in the aroma and somewhat reminiscent of Celebrator. In the end it is pretty damn good but not up the classics of this style.

12 oz bottle

Thanks to whomever sent this in a trade - I think it was one of the Atlanta crew. It wasn’t bad but based on this sample Atwater seems to be one of those breweries who makes good but not great beer. If I were to run across one of their beers on tap I may give it a try assuming the other options were not of interest.

Aroma / Appearance - A one finger oak colored head sat on top of a dark red carbonated body. Blackberries, Dr Pepper and red licorice had me thinking I was at the movies with a large soda and a jumbo pack of Twizzlers. Dark bittersweet chocolate hid in the background.

Flavor / Palate - The mouthfeel was a bit of Coke without the carbonation. Blackberries, topioca and burnt toast formed a mildly boring feel across the tongue and throat. The finish of iced tea laced with fruit kept things from being a total waste. On the whole however I just did not get excited while finishing the bottle. It was certainly done well but just felt lacking. Then again, not everyone can make the perfect beer every time so I am willing to give them the benefit on the doubt on this one.

Very nice doppelbock. Liked all the alcohol content. A very big and dark beer. (heh, just like it says)

12oz pour to a nice white head that was gone in 2 seconds. Sweet nose along with a vinegar smell mixed in. If this is not a bottle gone bad, then this is one of the worst overall beers I ever had. Zero body for a Dopple and the flavor is sweet candy, no hints of anything good. This has to be a bad bottle. Glad I only bought one. The worst $1.95 I have ever spent.

Pours a very dark brown that looks cloudy. Small tannish head that keeps with a small film of head.Mild sugar on there. Smells like the candy they make bracelets out of that you bite pieces off. Then there is some wood on there too. Then there is some minor caramel notes. All of it adds up to very little really. Flavor is okay. Smooth, yes. Full of character, no. Sweetness rises up several seconds in and really sings on the tongue for a bit before it dies down. Just not much else going on really. Nothing interesting. Feel has a good carbonation and the liquid is good. But overall this is one not exciting dopplebock. Even the 9.5% alcohol doesn’t really mean much when I don’t feel motivated to finish it.
