Sweet nose along with a vinegar smell mixed in. If this is not a bottle gone bad, then this is one of the worst overall beers I ever had. Zero body for a Dopple and the flavor is sweet candy, no hints of anything good. This has to be a bad bottle. Glad I only bought one. The worst $1.95 I have ever spent. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 7, 2007 Pours a very dark brown that looks cloudy. Small tannish head that keeps with a small film of head.Mild sugar on there. Smells like the candy they make bracelets out of that you bite pieces off. Then there is some wood on there too. Then there is some minor caramel notes. All of it adds up to very little really. Flavor is okay. Smooth, yes. Full of character, no. Sweetness rises up several seconds in and really sings on the tongue for a bit before it dies down. Just not much else going on really. Nothing interesting. Feel has a good carbonation and the liquid is good. But overall this is one not exciting dopplebock. Even the 9.5% alcohol doesn’t really mean much when I don’t feel motivated to finish it.

Amazingly the alcohol was not at all noticeable, at least for such a strong brew. Slight fruit aroma, with nice notes of caramel and plum. jrob21 (1278), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Roasted caramel malt gives this one some body. You get that candi sugar too. I think that’s the munich malt but I am not a pro at that sort of thing. Purple fruit flavors like plum. Add in some caramel and you get your beer. Would like to see this a little more full bodied with a little more malt. cathcacr (592), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Aug 6, 2007 Did I mention in an earlier review that this brewery is named for Atwater St. in Detroit, which is damn close to the water? Not what a doppel is supposed to be, really. Too carbonationy, too watery, faint smokiness on the aroma is all. And where’s the buzz I’m supposed to be getting from 9.5%? I wanna challenge; this is not a worthy fucking adversary.
Now playing: Shostakovich 4. I saw two music buffs stating agreement that this is his best symphony. Likewise, not a worthy fucking adversary. The man pads it with stuff that goes nowhere like there’s no tomorrow. Shosty’s symphonies can go shove it and I’ll stick to his chamber works. There -- your classical music lesson for the day. You’re welcome.
(Now, the man in the black pajamas. That’s a worthy fucking adversary.)

| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jul 25, 2007 12oz bottle. Deep ruby brown with a moderate sized tan head. Sweet caramel malt aroma, with a little plum in the background. Flavor is again sweet malt, with dried fruit, brown sugar, and toffee. I expected a bit fuller body. Long, sweet finish, with some alcohol burn evident. Not bad. brentfeesh (1039), Gadsden, Alabama, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jul 24, 2007 12 oz bottle. Pours chestnut colored with a light head. The aroma has leather, rubber, new car smell and roasted malt. Lightly sweet notes in the flavor of sweet caramel and toasted grain, molasses, some metallic hints and just a touch of dark fruit. Medium body, and fairly carbonated with a light creamy/slick finish.
