Atwater Voodoo Vator Doppelbock

GABF 2008. Pours dark brown with a large, creamy, light brown head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, nutty), light hops (herbs), average yeast (dough, meat) with notes of dates and apple. Medium bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

Pours mahogany into a stem glass. Immediate 4-finger head with tenacity. Cocoa aromas. Mild and unobtrusive with hints of coffee and cocoa. Slight sour caramel finish.

Bottle from Canals in Marlton. Seemingly clear and very dark brown pour supporting a small light brown head. Odd licorice and sweet malty aroma. Surprisingly well-balanced and crisp malty flavor with a strong smoky note. Just enough hops to keep the malt sweetness in line. Thin texture but invitingly smooth and sweet finish.

Pours a dismal murky orange-tinted brown with a faint beige froth. Sour malt aroma. Tart rye bread, lightly peaty. Soda body. Odd.

12 oz. Translucent mahogany with a lasting three-finger meringue above. Crunchy and creamy lacing everywhere. Aroma is sourish cherry akin to a lambic - smells OK, but not a good sign in a dopplebock. Flavors of tart cherry, cocoa, coffee with brown sugar and light oak are nice, like a few Belgian stouts I’ve sampled but just a touch less roast. Almost a Belgian porter, but a bit bigger. Medium body is mostly smooth, slightly acidic and roasty dry. Obviously infected, but I enjoyed this one nonetheless.

12oz Bottle from Discount Liquors. A loud pop with the decapping and it pours with a huge head. With a few sips I realize why there was such a huge head. Sour notes abound. There might be an infection here. Rich chocolate and brown sugar in the nose with some sour hints. Lots of those sour cherry fruit notes in the flavor with some roast and chocolate flavors lost under that sour fruit. hmm .... i’ll have to try again.

Bottle. Pours ruby brown with a tan head. Sweet malty aroma with chocolate, toast, and caramel. The flavor is sweet caramel and fresh bread. Nice.

(Draft) Pours a dark brown body with small creamy tan head. Aroma of vanilla, roasted malt, and coffee. Flavor of roasted malt, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted bread.
