Commercial Description:
This is a dopplebock high-gravity lager. This one is big, black and sweet. It’s malty character is derived from two caramel malts along with Munich malt to create the smoothest high-gravity beer this side of the pond.

Strong flavor and malt character mark this doppel as an ominous concoction as the supernatural name implies. Typical complex flavors of dark sweet fruits and roasted malts dominate. Hides the 9.5% quite well. A very good beer.

Bottle purchased at Corral Liquors in Granite City, IL. An explosive gusher, it pours 1 part cloudy mahogany liquid and 4 parts towering, sticky, fluffy, beige head. The nose seems more like a schwarzbier than a doppelbock: chocolaty bread dough, light caramel and a ton of yeastiness. Light to medium-bodied and creamy-slick with a mildly dry finish. The flavor pretty much follows the nose. An interesting interpretation of the style, but it reminds me more of Mönchshof Schwarzbier than any doppelbock that I’ve ever sampled.

Ontap @ Coles Buffalo NY. Pours a medium brown with some reddish hues. Nose has some light coffee, roasted malts. Taste is somewhat watered down. Malty, cola, medium sweetness.Easy drinking but I expect some more oomph from a dopplebock

Pours dark brown, almost black, with red highlights and a full, off-white head. Aroma is really unique, possibly unpleasant, though I haven’t decided yet. Tons of breadiness in the nose, lots of dark fruit, brown sugar, sourdough, spiciness, root beer, slight sweet hazelnut notes. Flavor is somewhat bitter, burnt, and roasty, with balance coming from sweet maple brown sugar, slight dark fruit and hazelnut notes. There is something definitely amiss in the flavor, though. Nice dry finish. Not a breathtaking beer, but I feel like this beer is severely underrated.

12oz. bottle. Sweet aroma of dark malts, caramel, dried fruit and some rather unwelcome musty, metallic notes. Deep brown color with a ridiculously foamy, sticky head. Flavor is again malty and dark, some faint hints of cola and cocoa, but these are swiftly overridden by old wet blanket and tartness. Palate is oddly drying and astringent, body is pretty full. This is pretty sure to be infected. Normally I wouldn’t rate a beer in this condition, but I had a Salvation IPA last night with the same problem, kinda leads me to believe there is a QC issue behind it. Needless to say, I didn’t finish the glass.

Bought at Piccolo’s near Wolf Lodge, Sandusky OH, thanks Rate Beer for showing me the way there! Looks a bit like root beer with the head and color. Mild doughy aroma. Swee tooth palate in the 1st sip. Disappates in the mouth a bit. Booze well hidden. Blackened malt in the finish. Pretty one dimensional for a doppel, not a lot of complexity, but nice sweet and warming (alc) notes in palate as it warmed.
