Rastacouere (5201), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Apr 7, 2008 Objectively speaking:
A simplistic, not intense, but efficient beer focusing on nothing but smoke.
I like:
Generous beechwood smoke, that must be 50%+ smoked malt. Highly aromatic. I drank my whole glass in less than 10 minutes.
I dislike:
Rather feeble body lacking tightness and whose carbonation fades quickly. No head retention. Quite sweet, which reduced the drinkability a lot. Sweet and thin is a dangerous combination. Not very flavourful outside the smoke, mostly straightforward caramel malt where a kiss of noble hops might have brought extra balance.
Boutip (1716), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jul 9, 2008 Bottle: Poured a deep clear brown color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma consists of caramel malt with light smoky notes. Taste is also a nice enough mix between some caramel malt with some medium smoke notes. Probably not as much smoke as some the German smoked beers out there but I am not sure that was the point anyway. Well balance and easily drinkable. french tickler (451), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada Jul 1, 2008 341ml Bottle
App.:
Dark cloudy copper/brown body with a thick foamy beige head that quickly faded away
Aromas:
Malty, hickory, toffee and caramel
Palate:
Medium body, nicely effervescent, nice even mouthfeel...
Flavors:
Smoked bacon, burnt caramel, malty...
Notes: Smoky sums it up nicely, didnt expect much... definitly a good surprise Lubiere (3144), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada May 25, 2008 Dark reddish copper ale with a thin lacing off white head. Noted smoked ham aroma, with light caramel, In mouth, a lightly smoked sweet malt with light lactic notes, and light herbal hops. Short in mouth. On tap at Vices et Versa, 6 Feb. 2008. (Rating #1660) MartinT (4241), Montreal, Quebec, Canada May 3, 2008 My Bottom Line:
Intense beechwood smokiness quickly veers into mineral and burnt profiles, scaring the tastebuds from this otherwise caramelly but anemic Smoked Ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A layer of sturdy foam tops the clear deep copper.
-The body is thin and the big bubbles quite frothy, which makes for an uninteresting mouthfeel.
-This tastes a bit like when they had trouble with the copper element in their kettle. The smoked malt is bothered by a problematic ash-like lingering finish.
-A vague fruitiness stems from the caramel maltiness.
