What I will say is Augsburger was arguably the best lager in the USA, bar none. I recall my Dad drinking it in the 60s from quart bottles, and I loved it through the 80s in the green 6-packs. As the last regional to hold the Augsburger contract, I do not understand how Huber can’t make their Berghoff Lager taste like this! No excuse. RIP Augsburger; we loved ya! UPDATE: just went to the Monroe, Wisconsin website for the people that apparently bought out Huber. The music is the same as the Pabst website. Sadly, all my questions have been answered. esjaygee (1519), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA

Semi-skunky aroma with a touch of bread & fruit. Astringent & thin, but does give way to some mild hops & fruitiness but dryness prevails. Nothing special here. | 0.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 2/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 3/20 | May 27, 2007 From a 12-oz bottle, picked up from Pick & Save in Marshfield, WI, pours a light golden honey yellow with a thin fast dissolving head. Lots of carbonation. Aroma is immediate skonk maybe a little citrus but even more SKONK! The skunkiness may indicate the green bottle does not block the sunlight. Taste is very highly carbonated, grainy and sour. Finish is gritty and sour. This may have been a bad bottle but I remember the Augsburger from Huber was much better. Poured a clear lager golden with a small foamy white head.
Grainy and grassy aromas with a light spicy and a subtle fruitiness.
Even, steady carbonation and a softly crisp, smooth light bodied mouthfeel.
Grainy tasting with a very light caramel, a little lemon-like fruitiness, a soft spiciness, the hops are way in the background, and a sort of dry hayish, sweet malty finish.
Passable drinkability, but I wasn’t too impressed with this lager, glad I only purchased this as a single.

| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 2/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 8/20 | Nov 2, 2006 Green 12oz twist off bottle. Aroma of skunk, must be that German Hallertauer Hops. Golden color, no head. Taste, yeah? Not much flavor here. no body, lots of fizz. Had more fun with Eastern European lagers. Still better than BUD.
