Dry, citrusy hops in the very interesting, floral aroma. Taste is dry with refreshing grapefruit juice, tea, and flower flavors. Good, long, dry aftertaste. Medium body. Crisp in the palate. Good stuff! jrob21 (1275), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 16, 2008 Big sweet fruity drink. Pours clear brown. Syrupy aroma with a resiny hop smell and some pine as well. Grapefruit hop flavor with a caramel backbone. Bitter pine and resin hop finish. Pretty quick on the finish and I would call this a bit closer to a double IPA as opposed to an American Strong. MOboy (446), Kansas City, Missouri, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 15, 2008 With the breaking news of King Carl Petersons resignation, I thought I would tip this cap to the new Chief, Clark Hunt. It pours a nice copper red hue with a big, sticky foam. Aroma is also big with resiny hops reminiscent of Two Hearted and Celebration with a touch of caramel. Whoa. Massive hop flavor, hay, grass, unsweetened tea. The mouthfeel of this pale monster is BIG, malty and fairly bitter, just not as bitter as the Kings reign. Fin (3457), Merton, Oxfordshire, England
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 12, 2008 Had this somewhere on our Manhattan and Brooklyn pub crawl great night, my ratings started to become a little less detailed when I realised it was session on and no mistake and this was case in point. Lyons golden syrup or some sort of inverted sugar, hoppy but sweet, thick heavy, but bloody marvellous. A7 A4 F8 P4 OV16 mistersinalin (378), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 10, 2008 Shared a bottle with a buddy before Thanksgiving. I thought this was going to be better. It tasted more like an IIPA, with fair hops. Also, I didnt like the politics on the bottle. I cant imagine that brewers know the first thing about solving real problems, but Im sure the message helped sell more beer, especially in places like Colorado and Minnesota. Easy. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 10, 2008 22 oz. bottle, poured into a tall pilsner glass on 2 December 2008...obviously, I could not wait until Inaguration Day to whip this puppy out, but I might try to find another to replace it with.
In the glass, it is enticing and intriguing, with the beautiful orange color of apricot or mango nectar. A thin yet tenacious creamy white head laces the top.
The first thing that hits the nose is the alcohol, but it quickly flows into a nice bouquet of hops and sweet malt, with some mysterious fruitiness lurking beneath the surface.
The nose does NOT prepare you for the treasure trove of flavor that greets the tongue! Cantaloupe, persimmon, apricot, peach ice cream, and sweet resinous hop lead into a finish that almost hints at fresh cardamom. The finish is dizzying and, strong as it is, begs, nay, dares, you to take another sip. And another.
On the palate, Oh, boy, do you ever feel that 8.75%. It definitely finishes like an Imperial or DIPA. Based on the nose and preliminary tongue, I fear the sweetness that seems to be on the way, but somehow it all works. It flirts with being too sweet, but never commits. The spicy hop finish tames the candy corn and sends it away.
This is one of THE best new beers I have had in a long while. It is quite complex and enjoyable. I doubt I could have more than one at a time. Just too strong, and the 22 oz almost defeated me! But, after all, one CAN only have one beer at a time...It is so heady, it is almost in league with certain barleywines.
Try with spicy Indian food. It worked great with a Senegalese peanut soup we made. I would also be tempted to try this alongside pistachio ice cream or even a hot peach cobbler. illinismitty (1799), Nashville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 10, 2008 Bottle from the buttplug Ross. Pours orange amber with a slight haze, and retentive off white head. Fruity ale ester nose with some sweet citrusy hops. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavor of pale toffee esque malts countered by a huge grapefruit and pine hoppiness. Moderate attenuation. Semi-dry bitter finish. Seems like this one sits in between a IIPA and an ASA.
