Commercial Description:
Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

hazy amber pour with tan head. aroma of floral notes, dark fruit, and sweet malt. tastes of more caramel malt and dark fruit. there are many particulates in suspension which is apparent on the palate. very nice balanced finish.

Batch 2. Deep mahogany and clear, with white lacing. Red plum and raisin with a musty, dusty yeasting on the nose... a slight orange peel type citrus. Sour raisin and chocolate on the palate -- an odd mix that’s both biting and sweet. I’m not sure these two beers get along in a blend as well as I thought they would. Any differences on the front of the palate are resolved in time for a slightly creamy, herbal finish that makes the most of the sweet light caramel in the profile.

Deep golden amber color with a nice tightly packed white head that lasted and laced. Sweet malt and fruit in the aroma and flavor. A touch of spice, yeast and alcohol present as well. Slightly sour on the finish. Smooth on the palate. Enjoyable.

Good but nothing out of this world; although was too keen on Avery’s salvation. Aroma had a nice bread like quality mixed with a sweet malt note, closer to sugar cane. Flavor was similar with some fruit like notes in the finish. btw it was batch 2.

A very smooth and drinkable ale. The aroma is fruity with plums and dates dominationg. The flavour is quite subdued with the plums, sweet malt and esters dominationg and some wine like notes on top. Ends quite balanced. It really doesn’t make much noise, but it’s a nice and rounded beer.

A good beer (Batch 2) but there are better offerings out there. I don’t say that as a dig on this beer, but more out of respect to how many amazing Belgians there are out there. Nice amber/brown color on pour, minimal white head. Sweetness on the nose, all malt, with some fruit and spice. Taste is same as the nose - sweet with a slight hint of spice.

16.9 oz bottle, bought at West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago. Pours an amber/orange color, slightly murky, with minimal fizzy off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt, slight hops, spice, and alcohol. Taste is sweet malt and fruit, with slight sour bite, with alcohol finish. Smooth and slightly fizzy mouthfeel. Pretty decent Belgian Strong.

I feel like a bit of a curmudgeon whenever I rate an Avery, but they all seem similar to me ... to much alcohol, not enough interest. This was a sort of sweet sort of malty pseudo-Belgian with too much alcohol presence. I know I’m out on a limb on this one, but I found this one without interest. // rerated 24 March 2009, much more interesting draft. Moved up from a 2.6 to a 3.2.
