Commercial Description:
Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over 2 years we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie flew out to Avery to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery. This was blended with Avery’s Salvation December 11th, 2006. We hope you enjoy it as much we enjoyed brewing and blending it.

Cloudy orange-brown with big, creamy tan head / Estery nose of banana and spice / Full bodied, sweet malts, with long, creamy and sweet, hop finish / Big flavors of banana, orange, plum, caramel, coriander, and clove / Big, thick, rich, possibly a bit cloying, but very good.

Semi clear yellow copper in color with a decent ivory tan head. Smell is slight belgian funk but has some grassy and pine notes in there as well. Mouthfeel is a bit stagnant and monotone. Taste is average overall - nothing too amazing. Surprisingly mild!

(cleaning out my beer bottle collection as pictured in my profile and utilizing ratebeer.com) As I recall, interesting blend of flavors here. Malty richness of pitted fruits with a nice creamy head.

On tap at Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a dark caramel color with red highlights. Has a thick white head and thick filmy white lacing. Aromas of Belgian yeast, clove, bubblegum, some oak. Flavors disappoint and lack the variety of the aroma. Creamy malts come through well, with a subdued yeast character. Clove and banana round out. Pretty cloying overall though. Sticky on the mouth, dry finish. Hard to finish the glass.

Bottle. Mango, prune, plum, some general dried fruit character, toffee. The body also was reminsicent of dried fruit, ever so slightly chalky at times, but not in an offputting way. Less carbonation than many Belgians, I guess due to a lack of heavier bottle conditioning often used with them. I thought it was a pretty interesting, if not wowing brew.

22oz bomber courtesy of Odeed. Pours a frothy, quickly dissipating head of a dark caramel colour. Odd, but intriguing smell. I get both sides of the beer here with some vinous and biscuit notes being most present. Some nice candied fruits, fruity esters and toffee as well. Flavour is really one-sided towards the Avery version and I would have liked to see more of Vinnie’s creation in this one. Decent finish that left a nice mouth-coating feel on the palate. Back-end was dry and a slight warming element made itself known well after the initial sip. In my opinion, one of Avery’s better offerings and a good effort overall.

Bottle. Pours a dark murky brown with a small white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast and dark fruits. Taste of prune, raisin, Belgian yeast. Not terribly complex. A good beer, very drinkable.

This was called a porter at the bar and the brewers themselves call this a belgian strong ale, but it looks, smells, and tastes like an Old Ale to me. Red amber, melanoidin malt color with decent head. Deep cherry port and wood aromas tantalize. Flavor is full of rounded port, and cherry and wood. Seems mellowed and well aged. Wonderful complexity. Truly top-notch.
