Orange/red hue with fluffy head and good lacing. Acute hop flavor. Lot of floral and citrus/pine notes. With enough malt that after a few sips it almost tastes sweet. Or is that my tongue going numb? Great lingering bitterness. Very good beer. mdi (573), Nebraska, USA

Hop resin nose, slight perfume...strong aroma, could smell it as soon as I opened the bottle. Drinks nice, good attenuation. Hops, hops and more hops...not much malt flavor, but a bit of stickiness, good solid bitterness, but not harsh, astringent, or unpleasant. Great hops, alcohol is totally hidden. Drink at cellar temp by the St. Vrain and enjoy! lilannie (384), State College, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 19, 2004 Aroma: pineapples, mangoes, hops, minerals, peaches, pine, grapefruits
Appearance: light, semi-murky brown, head, lacing
Flavor: crisp, sweet, hops--not nearly as overwhelming as Hercules, grapefruit juice/ripe grapefruit, pine needles, very acidic--like sour lemons, minerals--compared to Hercules--much more balanced, actual flavors apparent
Palate: crisp, bright, grapefruit juice aftertaste--very dry hoppiness--like a double IPA should taste like
Overall: not my favorite style JPDIPSO (4935), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 16, 2004 Clear dark amber color with a tall thick dense beige head. Certainly a bushel of fresh hops run over by a lawn-mower would smell like this. Perhaps a touch of light toast as well. Light sweet start and follow through. I can sense the malt but it does get lost in the hops vines. It peeks out every once and awhile, but is quickly surrounded and held hostage by the hops. Alpha and betas are flying about. Thick and slippery with a small burn near the finish that hampers the feel. As it warms some over ripe melon, serrano pepper and alcohols come out. Yes, this is for the truly hop blooded and I will admit I enjoyed it, but I enjoy balance slightly more. jaymobrown (1360), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 16, 2004 Very hoppy nose. Golden color, and really bitter. Not much in the floral, perfume, or citrus department, which is disappointing. Good, but mostly just a hop fest without any other characteristics. Good, not great, but good. Right up there with the really good IIPA’s And now my favorite Avery selection. Gold color, nice head & citrus aromas. Sticky hop taste without being too sweet. Thanks. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 15, 2004 Updated: Jul 26, 2004Avery Eleven for #1100. Thought this was a cool idea and then, the moment after I opened it, I realized how much cooler it would have been to wait for #1111. Eh, oh well. Orange-gold, big puffy head. Nose is, not surprisingly, quite hoppy, citric and tart, quite a bit of resin. Flavor surprisingly sweet when it hits the mouth at first, then at the swallow a load of pine resin hits with citric followup. Decent maltiness for heft, but dies a bit at the end, a bit watery but not too much so. Decent stuff. ¾ (5006), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 14, 2004 Light orange and slightly murky. Huge white head. Soapy hop aroma, very sweet and sharp. Similar to the Hercules in just about every way... piney, grapefruit, citrus. Crisp and sweet, entirely too bitter with nothing there to balance... I understand that some brewers might think that this is the DIPA style, but think again... this is just another unorganized hop orgy.
