A melting wax scent. Clean lite red/ orange color. Medium head that faded. Bitter flavors, Citrus, (grapefruit, orange) burnt, waxy, spicy(cayanne) nutty. Lite creamy, though thinner overall. Bitter finish. Warming. Good, but not great. Tad disappointing, next to the barleywine, somehow the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Quetzalcoatl (153), Baltimore, Maryland, USA

The smell of this beer has my mouth watering…fantastic. Lotsa hop; strong aroma of grapefruits. The taste is just as good, and just as hopped, however not excessively bitter. Plenty of malty richness to back up the bite of the hops. This is a great dub IPA. millerclmb (44), Boulder, Missouri, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 3, 2004 Nice golden color with a thin head. Incredibly potent hoppy aroma but not on the bitter side...smells like the zest of a grapefruit with melted buttery brown sugar cascading around it.
The taste is at first fruity, then a little astringent, but balances as it swishes into a malty mellowness. Super soothing...does not bite like I expected. Second only to the Hercules for this imperial IPA. smoosh (523), New Albany, Indiana, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 1, 2004 Bottle - Very nice deep, dark gold. Maybe a touch of red. Big grassy, citrusy hop nose. Very nicely balanced with malt. Almost too much so. I wouldn’t mind a little more of the "shock" that the label promised. Pretty thick body. This is a very nice brew! | 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 30, 2004 Big taste. Not too much of the bitterness associated with very hoppy beers, probably because it’s also very fruity, but without being too sweet. I really like it. An interesting take on pale ale. erway (1002), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jun 29, 2004 Pours a deep golden with a big pillowy head and nice lacing. Aromas of every citrus under the sun. Orange, grapefruit, lemon, and alcohol dominate. Some piney bitterness, probably from chinook. A little on the sweet side, even if it did finish off at 1.015. Lot’s of hops? Yes. Balanced? No. Needs a little more in the flavor hops and a bit lower of a saccarification temp. to get rid of some of that sweetness. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 27, 2004 Hop juice. Great nose of bursty, citrusy, piney, glorious hops...but the one dimension doesn’t make a great beer. Missing some bigger, stronger malts to balance this (somewhat). | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jun 27, 2004 Over rated big time. Sure it has hops and stuff, but this is not a balls to the wall double IPA. In fact, it reminds me a lot of Sierra Nevada. that is just about it.
