Vaguely cidery quality to the otherwise simple crystal malt falvour. Not very nutty or hoppy to me. I’ll have to try this one again some time. astrofrk (219), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 1, 2008 A canonical brown. Looks fantastic. Aroma is nutty, hint of roast, and some good malt. Flavor is just excellent, nice malt with some good hop hints. Finish is clean and good. You can’t go wrong with this brown. Avery’s kinda known for their huge beers, but this is one of their best, methinks. gringo332 (244), Richardson, Texas, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 24, 2008 12 oz. bottle into shaker. Rich slightly hazy dark brown color with a great creamy dirty tan head that holds well and laces. Very nice doughy nutty malty rich aroma with some nice bitter hop notes to it too - really well balanced and appealing. Flavor starts with doughy malt upfront that quickly morphs into a very nice nuttiness coupled with some nice bitter pine notes. Some oakyness with some hints of vanilla and chocolate in there too. Medium bodied with soft, just the sight amount of carbonation. Overall: usually not the most complex style, but this really has lots going on in it and provides a perfect and really refreshing example of its style. This is a great fall session beer. The more I drink, the more I think this is a truly exception beer. NachlamSie (1644), Tennessee, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 23, 2008 Bottle. Pours a brown color. This is a straight forward brown ale with no surprises, but it is well done. The aroma and flavor are nutty without being overly sugary. No pronounced hoppiness is present, but rather this focuses on burned, nutty malty quality, though certainly not as roasty as a porter or stout. The palate is medium, just about right for the style. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 22, 2008 Bottle from Hamilton’s. Pours with a Brown, translucent body with minimal head that dies down quickly. Aromas are interesting: a bit of chocolate, some sugar and hazelnut. Even then, aromas are somewhat subdued. Flavor is better than aroma: chocolate is the main call, but there is a roasted malt that comes off more sweet than burnt, a touch of molasses, some toffee and a nutty/malty finish. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 18, 2008 12 oz bottle from Plaza Liquor in Tucson AZ. Chocolate and nutty nose. Lots of the same in the flavor, without too much of that metallic brown ale I dislike. Not too bad for a brown.
