Commercial Description:
This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery's late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that's second to none, just like Ellie!

Bottled. A dark red-brown beer with a bubbly thick brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of caramel and nuts, but also with light notes of chocolate and hops. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of caramel, chocolate, and nuts, as well as lighter notes of vanilla, hops, and cream, leading to a dry woody and slightly bitter end. Dark bitter chocolate notes lingers in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is very smooth. This is how I like my brown ale.

Dark red-brown colored, big yellow head. Chocolate, toffee, mild hoppiness in sweet aroma. Medium bodied. Flavor is more roasted with coffee tones and some chocolate, bitter hops also there. Aftertaste is nicely hopped and bitter. Slightly too thin bodied and somehow watery palated.

Bottle. Brown, translucent body with minimal head that dies down quickly. Aromas are intersting: a bit of chocalte, some sugar and hazelnut. Even then, aromas are somewhat subdued. Flavor is better than aroma: chocolate is the main call, but there is a roasted malt that comes off more sweet than burnt, a touch of molasses, some toffee and a nutty/malty finish. The nut presence is very mild, but there. Body is a bit thin, but it works well with the flavoring and this is entirely enjoyable.

Bottled. Dark amberish brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma is chocolate, hops and malts. Flavour is chocolate, roasted malts and slight ryeish and nutty. Still it feels a bit empty.

Not a strong aroma, maybe some sweet malt. Very deep red colour, small white head. Strong sweet&sour taste, with some grapefruit. Long finish.

14 month old bottle. Dark brown with minimal head. Great aroma for the style; rich malt with a hint of alcohol. Kind of smokey aggressive malt flavour. Thin body. Dry malt. Short sweet finish.

(Bottled) Dark amber color with a smallish, but lasting, lacy head. Slightly vinous berry aroma with salty-licoricey maltiness. Quite licoricey, smooth-malty, slightly roasty flavor with some dried fruit and sourness. Medium-bodied palate with pretty high carbonation. Quite nice for a brown ale, but not much else. More malty and dark than expected.

On tap at speakeasy. Poured a dark copper brown with a small tannish head. Aroma was surprisngly hoppy with notes of mild chcolate, vanilla, and roasted malt. Flavor a carbon copy of aroma but with less depth. A pretty good brown.
