Commercial Description:
This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery's late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that's second to none, just like Ellie!

dark brown with some ruby highlights. Aroma is chocolate, caramel, some fruitiness. Taste is about the same, thin palate, with a slightly roasted bitter finish.

Bottle. Pours a dark copper body with a medium-sized, soapy, tanned head. The aroma is reasonably toasty, creamy hazelnuts, and some bread. The body seemed a bit thin and watery at times but others moments contained flavours of chocolate and vast nuttiness. Good. Purchased at Bello Vino, Ann Arbor in March 2006.

One of the better brown ales that I’ve enjoyed. Chocolate in flavor, with a sweet taste.

Bottle (12oz). Very lively, swirly pour, deep clear chestnut brown with a large lasting fizzy-foamy tan head. Very mild aroma, but what’s there is nice - roast coffee/chocolate malt, tart grape, soft bitter hops, lightly grainy and earthy. Taste is very similar, light hops, quite roasty, almost a tobacco flavour, grapeseed and decided dirt-like (in a mostly good way). Slightly weak bodied, almost flat, quick off the palate - very tasty but ephemeral.

Bottle. Off-white longlasting creamy head. Hazy dark ruby body. Aroma of berries, slightly acidic flavor without being sour. Guess I’ll have to try it again later for actually this one did not taste of much. Had expected more.

Pours dark coffee brown with a shallow creamy froth. Smells of fresh hops like an IPA. Medium nectar weight with ample residual effers. Flavors are dry with a big fresh hoppy bitterness on the finish. Well ballanced. Hoppy for a brown. The leather and cocoa are almost nonexist. Excellent indeed. not malty at all. A well balanced session brew. Highly recommended.

[bottle] A nice, drinkable brown ale. Aroma is sweet, with some alcohol presence. Nutty, roasted malts. Finishes surprisingly hoppy.

Lightly roasted, caramel nose. Reddish brown on color with a nice white head. Kind of a ruddy sugar flavor, some hazelnuts and light molasses. Definite hop presence to make it an American-type of brown. Mildly quaffable.
