Commercial Description:
This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery's late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that's second to none, just like Ellie!

From bottle on August 8, 2009. Pours a clear, dark brown/amber with dark beige head, mostly diminishing. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, malts, nuts. Well-balanced with smooth finish. Just a wee bit sweet for my liking, but a good offering of the style. Lacing remained throughout.

Aroma has some chocolate malts, brown sugar and almond. Appearance was dark brown with a creamy mocha head. Flavor had almonds, chocolate and brown sugar. Palate is creamy and somewhat fizzy. Pretty good for the style and really kinda reminded me of a porter.

Growler filled at Superstar in Huntington. Pours a dark, clear reddish brown with a thin off-white head that was gone after the first sip. Very mild aroma of lightly roasted malt, nuts, and caramel. The flavor is chocolate, lightly roasted malt, nuts and caramel. Smooth finish with very light hops bitterness at the end. This is a very nice brown ale that went down way to easily! One of the better brown ales I’ve had in a while.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear, red-brown body with a finger-width, creamy, off-white head that leaves a good amount of thick lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet with some caramel, raw grains, nuts, and a faint roast. Flavor is a mild roast, sweet and nutty caramel, a creamy chocolate, and a light hop bitterness towards the end. Finishes dry with a sweet malt, light chocolate roast, and a hint of ripe fruit aftertaste. Palate is full and very smooth. Overall, a balanced and well rounded brown. Nothing over the top, but tasty. Nice, smooth body like a brown should be.

Malty brew with coffee and chocolate notes. Slight sweetness but not too much. Nice thick, frothy head. Going to be a fall mainstay for myself, I can tell already.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a mocha head over a dark brown (SRM 30) clear body.....nose starts with mild coffee, chocolate, cocoa, ends with mild hop florality....taste is medium chocolate, toffee, ending with light hop bitterness....mouth feel is medium as is carbonation. A nicely balanced good Brown Ale.

Okay, confession. The last 30 or so ratings I’ve had out of the bottle, and I don’t know what exact hue this beer is, but I’m guessing brown. Smell is toasty, cocoa-y malt. Taste is dry, cocoa and chocolate malt, nuts and a touch of fresh hops to give it a bright freshness and slight bitterness to cut through the malts. Pretty good for a brown ale and something I’d get again when I’m in the mood for one.
