Commercial Description:
This beautiful, deep russet brew has the sweet and somewhat nutty character of Adam Avery's late (1992-2002) Chocolate Lab, for which it is named. Crystal and chocolate malts give this beer a brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, while subtle hopping gives it an overall drinkability that's second to none, just like Ellie!

Bottle from Pizza Port bottle shop: Poured a dark brown color with a thick fluffing of foamy head. Aromas detected were a decent amount of toasted malts and an assortment of nuts both dry and smelling like they had been cooked or burnt. The flavor is delicate and smooth with lightly toasted malt that is both sweet and dry.

Unknown Date (2007?): Avery Ellie’s Brown Ale pours a clear brown color with an off-white head. A slight amount of choclate and roasted malts can be found in the aroma. The flavr has some chocolate and caramelized malts, but is grainy in the middle. It has some light coffee in the finish and is somewhat sweet overall. This beer has a medium-light body.

Bottle (sample). Rating #601 for this beer.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s, 7/9/09

Aroma: On first whiff I got mostly chocolate and roasted malts, going a little deeper, I find some nuttiness, some caramel, a bit of vanilla, and touch of sugar
Appearance: Nice dark brown looking color, slight red hue, minimal light brown head, leaves spotty lacing on the glass
Flavor: A nice malty flavor, you can really taste the nice complex mix of flavors that they have going on here to bring about a nice brown ale flavor
Palate: Medium bodied beer, that drinks smoothly without sacrificing flavor
Overall Impression: I like this beer. It’s nothing crazy, but a solid, nicely made brown with a good mix of flavors.

Northern English Brown style. Clear garnett and mahogany pour with a two finger light tan head, nice retention, sticky lace. Roasted nutty aroma with nuts. Tastes like... hmmm... nuts, coffee bitterness, biscuit. Medium-light body, medium carbonation. It is a beer that is brewed to style. Not my favorite style, can’t take away points for that reason only.

Pours a dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Flavor of caramel, chocolate, coffee, apples, nuts, and bread. There is also a slight earthy hops taste. It has a smooth thick palate. A pretty good complex beer.

The smell of this beer really sold me. The flavour was a little bit weak for the sheer amount of smell this beer was giving off, but it was still above average, certainly.

Not impressed. I was drinking a chocolate stout with a friend and got the two confused half way between. Either this speaks poorly of the stout or this beer. Not exactly a brown, not bad, just not a brown.

Pours transparent dark brown with a tall, chunky tan head that has great retention and leaves some faint lacing. Aroma is caramel, a suprising amount of roast, milk chocolate, vanilla, mild fruit notes, lightly toasted and honeyed nuts and some faint planty hops. Flavor is caramel and chocolate milk right away, leading into lots of roast for this style, a hint of coffee, vanilla, toasted nuts, apple pie, lots of toasty bread. The finish is a nice fade of darker caramel notes, apple, roast, and chocolate, but brings some planty, slightly bitter hops and mineral notes in. Palate is medium body with a creamy entry and slightly dry finish, carbonation level is a little sharp but not terribly so. This is a very nice brown ale, easily one of the best I have had, but really bordering on the porter side of the spectrum. I think this would pair nicely with a wide range of foods.
