Mild ozone and light roasted grains. Alcohol vapor, rich and hoppy. Dark black-brown with cocoa-colored lacing head. Medium-heavy body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet and rich with some caramel malt and brown sugar. Alcohol warming. Mild hoppy finish, fairly sweet. Big beer, very pronounced profiles, and still a bit hot. buzzoven (333), Japan

I tried to drink this but fouind myself struggling from the very beginning. Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of brown ales so perhaps I’m missing the appeal. Not even sure if i could describe the taste properly...just bad. Perhaps a bad bottle? frylock (1024), Buffalo, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 30, 2008 Very dark mahogany color that lets just a little light through. Thick, rocky tan head that leaves plenty of lace behind. Interesting aroma, toasty/roasted malts with undertones of cocoa powder and caramel are predominant with piney hops in the background. Buttery caramel flavors fade into grapefruit zest and a lingering pine/spruce bitterness. Aroma alludes to more maltiness than what is actually tasted. Flavor is definitely dominated by hops. kmeves (1080), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 24, 2008 Pours a deep cola black with a large, rocky beige head that quicky diminshes to a film. Aroma is moderately sweet caramel, herbal, grapefruit and some dark chocolate. Flavor is plum, raisin, herbal, chocolate, floral, grapefruit and finally caramel. Full bodied, sticky texture. I realy liked this beer much more than I thought I would. stetzel (22), portland, Oregon, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 18, 2008 Not the greatest anniversary to ever grace the Avery label. This is a big, warming beer, but a little to hoppy upfront with a strong fruit component that I was just not crazy about. Just not balanced enough, kind of a trainwreck on the palate in my opinion. thoramel (39), USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 14, 2008 Darker than I expected with a satisfying head and aroma. The taste was complex with hoppy undertones and malt/chocolate overtones. One of the better hopped-up dark ales I have tried. Definately a beer which I would buy again. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 14, 2008 Dark pour, nice head and lots of lacing. Aroma of malt balls and dark fruit leapt from the bottle, before the pour, from a foot away. The flavor was rich and complex. Chocolate, coffee, raisins, molasses all present to give this beer the richness of a fine dessert. A little heavy on the raisin/fig, which I’m not overly fond of. Enjoyable, nonetheless.
