Bready aroma, slight white/black Necco wafer tinge, minor cocoa powder. Has a candy sweetness that fills the nose, the powdery kind. Quite malty on the tongue, dark, moderate hop presense but without too much bitterness. Somewhat of an odd duck as it is. Big in malts, remains bready through to the finish. Seems like a really hefty American Amber crossed with some sort of Belgian. Picks up a little bit of citrus rind as it warms. I reiterate, this one is somewhat of an odd duck. I am getting some heavy breadiness, dark malts, slight citrus peel, and a touch of anise. Makes for a weird combination. Moderate to full body, moderate mouthfeel. Certainly an interesting beer, but one that just seems a bit confused. Lingering cocoa powder, Necco wafers, and subtle citrus peel. Well crafted, just a bit weird.

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Sep 1, 2007 Dark, dark brown with a light brown head on it in a trappist glass. Smell is of some hops, licorice like maltiness, and almost belgian like yeast. Very unique smell. Very unique taste as well, with a rich, thick, malty, definite licorice like sweetness, a bit of alcohol is present, but not bad for 9.5%, and perhaps again, a belgian like almost very light spiced quality to it. Different than any other American Strong Ale I’ve had, and much more drinkable. Reminds me a touch of New Belgium’s Abbey. Although not quite my speed, I can see some people really enjoying this beer. radiomgb (1957), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Sep 1, 2007 Deep ruby in colour, large and lingering tan coloured head, good lacing. The aroma is very hoppy with pine and citrus, caramel malt sweetness and noticable alcohol. The flavour has lots of alcohol, I actually found it to be dominated by alcohol, noticable hops, caramel malt sweetness and a bizarre unexplainable bitterness. Bitter mouthfeel, medium/large body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes long with lots of alcohol and lots of hops. This has intense alcohol and is very hoppy making this another one-dimentional Avery beer for my tastes.

Sweet and solidly malty with full body. Salty and very hoppy. Intensely flavourful and with in your face bolf flavours that leaves no doubt it’s an American beer. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 30, 2007 Pours a dark brown, that shows as a clear garnet when held to the light, topped with a dense, pitted, frothy beige head. The aroma is a rich, deep malty blend of dark fruits, pineapple, white pepper and both floral and faint piney hops. Full-bodied and creamy-smooth with a nice bitter hop finish. Sweet yet almost smoky malts up front with an immediate hit of hop bitterness following, some citrus some spruce-like, with notes of dark fruits and a dry, lightly bitter and peppery finish. There’s a lot going on with this one and while I’m not sure that it’s entirely well integrated, it’s definitely interesting and worth a try should you get your hands on a bottle. I’d bet that this one would mellow and blend much better with a little more age on it.
